Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "Darabna 'ala adhanihim" (ضربنا على آذانهم): Literally "We struck upon their ears" — meaning We sealed their hearing and cast deep sleep upon them, cutting off all external sounds.
- "Al-Kahf" (الكهف): The cave — a natural shelter in the mountain where the young believers sought refuge.
- "Sinina 'adadan" (سِنِينَ عَدَدًا): "For a number of years" — years that were counted and known to Allah, though their exact number was hidden from people at the time.
Explanation of the Verse:
After those young men — guided by Allah — withdrew from their people who had fallen into disbelief and polytheism, and after they took refuge in the cave, Allah answered their sincere prayer for mercy and guidance. He cast upon them a deep, profound sleep that sealed their ears from all sounds. This was not an ordinary slumber; it was a supernatural rest that preserved them for many years — years that were numbered and precisely known to Allah alone. The mention of the ears specifically is significant because hearing is the sense that most easily awakens a sleeper. When the ears are sealed, sleep becomes complete and undisturbed. Thus, Allah protected them from any noise, threat, or disturbance that might have exposed their location or broken their peaceful state. This divine intervention was a manifestation of Allah's absolute power and His care for those who sincerely seek His protection.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every believer to reflect on the boundless power of Allah — the One who controls sleep and wakefulness, hearing and silence, life and death. The same Allah who caused those young believers to sleep for years in a cave is fully capable of protecting you, guiding you, and granting you peace in the midst of life's trials. Just as they placed their trust in Allah and He responded with miraculous care, you too can turn to Him in your moments of hardship. Let this story strengthen your certainty that no matter how difficult your circumstances may seem, Allah's protection is greater, His plan is perfect, and His mercy encompasses all things. Sleep in the security of His remembrance, and wake to His guidance — for He is the Best of Protectors and the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
