Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shatra (شَطْرَ): Towards, facing, or in the direction of something.
- Hujjah (حُجَّة): An argument, proof, or justification — here it refers to a point of contention or a pretext for dispute.
- Alladheena Zalamoo (الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا): Those who wronged themselves and others through obstinacy, injustice, and stubborn rejection of the truth.
- Utimma Ni'mati (أُتِمَّ نِعْمَتِي): To complete and perfect My favour upon you — meaning the blessing of a distinct, complete, and honoured religious identity.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, from wherever you set out — whether for travel, residence, or prayer — turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque (the Ka'bah in Makkah). And O believers, wherever you may be on this earth, in any land or under any sky, direct your faces towards it when you pray. This command is repeated and emphasised so that there remains no doubt: the qiblah (direction of prayer) is now firmly and unchangeably the Sacred Mosque, abrogating the earlier direction towards Jerusalem.
Why this command? So that the people who oppose you — the Jews and the polytheists — will have no genuine argument against you. The Jews had claimed that the Prophet would follow their qiblah, while the polytheists of Arabia argued that he claimed to follow the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham), yet prayed towards Jerusalem rather than the Ka'bah, which Ibrahim himself built. By turning towards the Sacred Mosque, these false pretexts are shattered. However, those who are bent on wrongdoing and tyranny — the obstinate among them — will continue to argue with baseless and feeble excuses, for their aim is not truth but conflict. So do not fear them or their criticism; fear Me alone, by obeying My command and avoiding what I have forbidden. Their disapproval matters not when your Lord has spoken.
This change of qiblah is also a completion of My favour upon you: it distinguishes you as a unique and honoured community with your own sacred direction, chosen by Allah Himself. It is a sign of His care and a means for your guidance — that you may be led away from error and onto the straight path, following the pure legacy of Ibrahim, and attaining success in this life and the next.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, reflect on the beauty of this verse: your Lord, in His infinite wisdom, did not leave you without a direction. He gave you a qiblah that unites millions of hearts across the globe — all turning to one point, the Sacred Mosque, as a symbol of your unity and submission. When you stand in prayer facing the Ka'bah, you are not merely turning towards stones; you are turning towards your Creator, answering His call, and joining a brotherhood that transcends race, colour, and nationality. This is a mercy and a privilege — so cherish it, and let your heart be filled with gratitude. And remember: when you obey Allah, do not fear the criticism of the critics. Their words are hollow; His promise is true. Fear Allah, love Him, and He will complete His favour upon you and guide you to every good.
