- Ghayra Mutabarrijatin bi Zinah (غير متبرجات بزينة): Without displaying their adornments or revealing their hidden beauty in a way that attracts attention.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse brings a beautiful and practical concession from Allah, the Most Merciful, for elderly women who have passed the age of desire and marriage. When a woman reaches advanced old age—such that she no longer hopes for marriage, nor do men look at her with desire—Allah, in His infinite wisdom and compassion, lightens the ruling for her regarding outer garments.
Such women are permitted to remove some of their outer layers of clothing, like the cloak worn over the head and the outer wrap, when they are in the presence of non-mahram men. However, this permission comes with a crucial condition: they must not do so while displaying their adornments or revealing their beauty in any way that could attract attention or lead to temptation. The inner covering—the khimar (headscarf) and the rest of the body covering—remains obligatory and cannot be removed.
Yet, even with this allowance, the verse immediately encourages a higher standard: "And that they should refrain (i.e., keep their outer garments on) is better for them." This is a gentle invitation to choose the path of greater modesty and caution, as it keeps them further away from any suspicion or misunderstanding, and reflects a noble character that seeks Allah's pleasure above all.
The verse concludes with the profound reminder: "And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." He hears every word spoken and knows every intention hidden in the hearts. He is fully aware of why a woman chooses to take this concession or why she prefers to maintain her full covering—and He will reward her accordingly.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this religion of Islam! It does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, nor does it ignore the natural differences between people. Just as Allah granted ease to the elderly women in this matter, He has granted ease to every segment of society in various aspects of worship and daily life. This verse teaches us that Islam is a religion of balance—it combines practicality with the highest moral standards, and it always encourages believers to choose what is more virtuous and closer to piety.
Dear reader, see how Allah addresses even the smallest details of human life with wisdom and mercy. He knows our nature, our circumstances, and our struggles. So embrace this religion with confidence, for it is truly a mercy from your Lord. And whenever you face a choice between what is merely permissible and what is better, remember this verse and choose the path that brings you closer to Allah—for that is always the path of true success and tranquility.
