Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse paints a vivid picture of a person whose heart has been sealed against guidance. Such a person hears the verses of Allah — the clear, profound words of the Qur'an — being recited to him, and yet, instead of letting those words penetrate his heart and transform his life, he clings to his disbelief and sin with stubborn persistence. He does not merely turn away; he does so with arrogance, puffing himself up in pride, refusing to bow to the truth because his ego will not allow him to admit that he is wrong. His behavior is as if he never heard the verses at all — so completely does he ignore them, so utterly does he fail to let them affect him.
This is a severe warning from Allah to such a person. The verse says: "Give him tidings of a painful punishment." This is a form of bitter irony — the "good news" for this wicked, sinful liar is nothing but the promise of an agonizing torment in the Hellfire on the Day of Judgment. It is a destiny that awaits those who hear the truth, understand it, and yet choose arrogance over submission, and persistence in sin over repentance.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. The Qur'an is not a book to be merely heard with the ears — it is a message to be received with the heart. When you hear the verses of Allah, do they move you? Do they bring tears to your eyes, or at least a stirring in your soul? Or have you become like the one described here — hearing but not listening, knowing but not acting?
The greatest tragedy is not ignorance, but the arrogance that refuses to accept the truth when it is clear. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent down this Qur'an as a guide, a light, and a healing for what is in the hearts. Do not let pride — that poisonous trait of Iblis — prevent you from submitting to your Lord. For the one who humbles himself before Allah, Allah raises him in honor. But the one who exalts himself in arrogance, Allah abases him in the most painful way.
This verse is a warning, but it is also an invitation. It invites you to be among those who hear the verses of Allah and respond with humility, faith, and action. For such people, the tidings are not of punishment, but of Paradise — gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever. Choose today which tidings you wish to receive, for the choice is yours, and the time is now.
