Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Waylun (وَيْلٌ): A severe punishment, destruction, or a valley in Hellfire. It is a declaration of intense woe and suffering.
- Afaak (أَفَّاكٍ): A habitual liar, one who constantly fabricates falsehoods and distorts the truth.
- Atheem (أَثِيمٍ): One who is steeped in sin, committing transgressions excessively without restraint.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse delivers a stern and terrifying warning from Allah to every person who habitually lies and persists in sinful behavior. The word "wayl" signifies utter ruin and destruction—whether it be a severe punishment in this world, a painful torment in the Hereafter, or the infamous valley in Hellfire prepared for such individuals. The verse describes two intertwined qualities: the first is being an "affak"—one who fabricates lies, twists words, and spreads falsehoods to mislead others; the second is being an "atheem"—one who accumulates sins and crosses the boundaries set by Allah without remorse. Together, these traits describe a person who not only sins himself but also deceives others into following falsehood, thereby multiplying his guilt. This verse was revealed in the context of those who actively opposed the truth brought by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), such as al-Nadr ibn al-Harith, who persistently denied the revelation and mocked it with lies. The warning is universal, though, applying to anyone who embodies these characteristics.
A Call to Reflection and Righteousness:
Dear reader, let this verse be a wake-up call for your heart. Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not warn you except to save you from destruction. He loves for you to be truthful, for truthfulness is the path to Paradise, and He detests lying and sin, for they lead to ruin. Imagine the fate of those who spend their lives spreading falsehood—what will they face on the Day when every secret is exposed? But the door of repentance is always open. If you find in yourself any trace of these traits, hasten to seek Allah's forgiveness and reform your character. Be among those who speak the truth, uphold justice, and distance themselves from sin. For indeed, Allah's warning is a sign of His care, and His mercy is greater than your shortcomings. Turn to Him now, and you will find Him ready to forgive and guide you to everlasting success.
