Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who believe! When you intend to stand before your Lord in prayer, and you are in a state of minor impurity, then purify yourselves through wudu (ablution): wash your faces completely, and wash your hands and arms up to and including the elbows, and wipe your heads with wet hands, and wash your feet up to and including the ankles. This is the outward purification that prepares your body and soul for the sacred act of standing before Allah.
And if you are in a state of major impurity (janabah) — whether due to marital intimacy or other causes — then purify yourselves completely by taking a full bath (ghusl) before you pray. For Allah loves those who purify themselves, both outwardly and inwardly.
However, your Lord — in His infinite mercy — has made things easy for you. If you are ill and using water would harm you or delay your recovery, or if you are on a journey and water is scarce, or if one of you has just relieved himself, or you have been intimate with your wives, and you cannot find water after sincerely searching for it — then do not despair. Turn to pure earth: strike it with your hands, and wipe your faces and hands with it. This is tayammum, a beautiful concession from your Merciful Lord, replacing water when it is unavailable or harmful.
Allah does not intend to place any hardship upon you in matters of purification. Rather, He intends to purify you — from physical impurities and from sins — and to complete His favor upon you by granting you these facilities and concessions. He wants you to be grateful, recognizing His kindness and responding with obedience and thankfulness. So embrace these teachings with love and devotion, for they are a path to both physical cleanliness and spiritual elevation.
