Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ni‘mah: The blessings and favours of Allah upon His servants.
  • Mīthāq: A solemn covenant or binding pledge.
  • Wāthaqakum bihi: The agreement Allah took from you, making you bound to it.
  • Samighnā wa aṭaʿnā: "We hear and we obey" — an expression of full acceptance and submission.
  • Dhāt al-Ṣudūr: Literally "what is in the breasts" — the innermost secrets, intentions, and thoughts hidden in the hearts.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers, remember and reflect upon the great favour of Allah upon you — the blessing of Islam, which He guided you to, and the honour of being addressed by His revelation. This is a mercy that outweighs every worldly gift, for through it you have been granted the path to eternal success. Alongside this blessing, recall the solemn covenant that Allah took from you — the pledge you made when you responded to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) with the words: "We hear and we obey." This was the oath of allegiance you gave to follow the Prophet in times of ease and hardship, in what you love and what you dislike, and to submit wholeheartedly to the commands of Allah and His Messenger.

This verse calls you to remember that moment of commitment — when you testified with your tongues and affirmed with your hearts that you would listen to the truth and act upon it. It is a reminder that faith is not merely a claim but a covenant of obedience. Therefore, be mindful of Allah (have taqwā) in fulfilling this pledge — do not break it by falling into disobedience or negligence. Fear Allah in what He has commanded you and what He has forbidden you, for He is fully aware of what lies within your hearts. Nothing is hidden from Him — not a single intention, not a fleeting thought, not even the most secret whisper of the soul.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse is a beautiful invitation to pause and count the blessings of Allah — the greatest of which is the gift of Islam and the guidance to follow His Messenger. When you realise the magnitude of this favour, your heart naturally fills with gratitude, and gratitude draws you closer to your Lord. Remember the covenant you made — it is not a distant historical event but a living commitment that renews every time you say "I hear and I obey." Let this verse be a mirror for your soul: ask yourself, am I truly living up to this pledge? Do my actions reflect my words?

And know with certainty that Allah is All-Knowing of what is in your hearts. He does not need your outward show; He looks at your sincerity. So purify your intentions, strengthen your resolve, and let your obedience be a natural fruit of your love for Him. This is the path of the true believers — those who heard the call of truth and responded with unwavering submission. Be among them, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 5-9 — Al-Maidah

This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.
And remember the favor of Allah upon you and His covenant with which He bound you when you said, "We hear and we obey"; and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts.
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds [that] for them there is forgiveness and great reward.
