Meanings of Key Words:
- Qaf (ق): This is one of the disjointed letters (huruf muqatta‘ah) that appear at the beginning of some chapters of the Quran. Its full meaning is known only to Allah, yet it serves as a miraculous challenge to the Arabs, showing that the Quran is composed of the very letters they use in their speech, and still they cannot produce anything like it.
- Al-Majeed (المجيد): The Glorious, the Noble, the One of immense honour, abundant goodness, and sublime qualities. It describes the Quran as being exalted in its status, vast in its blessings, and perfect in its guidance.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah begins this chapter with the letter "Qaf" — a sound that captures the attention of the listeners and signals the miraculous nature of this Book. Just as the Arabs of that time were masters of eloquence, Allah challenges them with the very letters of their own language, proving that this Quran is beyond human capacity.
Then Allah takes an oath by the Glorious Quran — the Book that is honoured, noble, and full of blessings. It is described as "Majeed" because of the greatness of its meanings, the depth of its wisdom, and the endless good it brings to humanity. This oath is not a casual one; it is a solemn affirmation of a profound truth.
The implied answer to this oath — which the following verses make clear — is that the resurrection is certain. The people of Makkah denied the Day of Judgement, so Allah swears by the Quran, the ultimate source of truth, that they will indeed be raised from their graves to face the reckoning. The Quran itself is the greatest proof of Allah’s power and wisdom, and it stands as a witness that the One who revealed it is fully capable of bringing the dead back to life.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder the majesty of this opening. Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, chooses to swear by the Quran — a Book that He Himself sent down. This alone shows you its immense value. If you truly wish to find honour, dignity, and success in this life and the next, hold fast to this Glorious Quran. Read it, understand it, and live by it. It is not merely a scripture; it is a living miracle, a guide for every generation, and a mercy for all of humanity. Let the Quran be your companion, and you will never be lost. The One who revealed it has promised to protect it and to honour those who cling to it. So open your heart to its light, and you will find peace that no worldly treasure can ever provide.
