📖 English Meaning
And what Allah restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the [stranded] traveler - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Afā'a (أفاء): What Allah returned or gave to His Messenger from the wealth of the disbelievers without fighting or military expedition.
  • Ahl al-Qurā (أهل القرى): The people of the towns and villages, referring here to the Jewish tribes and other communities around Madinah.
  • Dhul-Qurbā (ذو القربى): The relatives of the Prophet ﷺ, specifically the clans of Banu Hāshim and Banu al-Muttalib.
  • Yatāmā (اليتامى): Orphans — poor children who have lost their fathers.
  • Masākīn (المساكين): The needy and the poor who are in need of help.
  • Ibn al-Sabīl (ابن السبيل): The wayfarer — a traveler who has run out of resources and is stranded away from home.
  • Dawlah (دولة): Wealth that circulates exclusively among a particular group, passed from hand to hand among the rich only.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

In this noble verse, Allah teaches us the divine wisdom behind the distribution of the *fay'* — the wealth that comes to the Muslims from the disbelievers without any battle or cavalry charge. This wealth does not belong to any single individual or class; rather, it belongs to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, to be spent in the public interest of the Muslim community. It is then distributed among the relatives of the Prophet ﷺ, the orphans, the needy, and the stranded traveler — all of whom are given their due share.

The profound reason behind this divine legislation is stated clearly: so that wealth does not become a monopoly circulating only among the rich. Islam came to establish justice and balance in society, ensuring that the poor and vulnerable are not forgotten while the wealthy accumulate more and more. This is a timeless principle — wealth in a Muslim society must serve everyone, not just an elite few.

Then comes a golden rule that every believer must hold dear: "Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it." This is a comprehensive command that covers all aspects of life — whether it is wealth, worship, manners, or dealings. The Prophet ﷺ did not speak from his own desire; his commands and prohibitions were guided by revelation. Therefore, obeying him is obeying Allah, and following his Sunnah is the path to success in this world and the Hereafter.

Finally, the verse concludes with a powerful reminder: "Fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in punishment." This is not merely a warning — it is an invitation to mindfulness. When we know that Allah sees everything and that His punishment is severe for those who disobey, we become more careful in our actions. We strive to obey His commands, avoid His prohibitions, and follow the guidance of His Messenger ﷺ with sincerity and devotion.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear believer, look at the beauty of this verse! It teaches us that wealth is not an end in itself, but a means to build a compassionate society. When you give from what Allah has blessed you with — whether through obligatory charity or voluntary generosity — you are not losing anything; you are investing in your Hereafter. And when you follow the Messenger ﷺ in every matter, you are walking on the path that leads to Allah's pleasure and eternal success. Let this verse be a light for you: take what the Prophet ﷺ brought you with an open heart, abstain from what he forbade with firm resolve, and always remember that Allah's watchful eye is upon you — His mercy is vast, but His punishment is severe for those who turn away. Embrace this guidance, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next.

📜 Verse 5-9 — Al-Hashr

Whatever you have cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their trunks - it was by permission of Allah and so He would disgrace the defiantly disobedient.
And what Allah restored [of property] to His Messenger from them - you did not spur for it [in an expedition] any horses or camels, but Allah gives His messengers power over whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent.
For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.
And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
