Surah Al-Anfal — Verse 1

This question arose because some of the young Muslims had rushed to collect the booty, while others had remained guarding the Prophet, leading to a dispute among the ranks.

Allah instructs you, O Messenger, to answer them clearly: "The spoils belong to Allah and His Messenger." This means the entire matter—its ownership, its distribution, and its final judgment—is in the hands of Allah and His chosen Messenger. The Prophet, guided by divine revelation, would divide the spoils justly and fairly, as Allah commanded him. So the believers had no right to dispute or demand a share on their own terms; their duty was simply to submit and obey.

Then, Allah turns to the believers with a profound and beautiful counsel: "So fear Allah and set things right among yourselves." This is a direct call to taqwa—God-consciousness—which should purify their hearts from greed, envy, and worldly attachment. The wealth of this world is fleeting, and it is not worth breaking the bonds of brotherhood over. Allah commands them to mend any rift, to let go of resentment, and to restore love, kindness, and mutual respect among them. The unity of the Muslim community is far more precious than any treasure.

Finally, Allah seals the verse with a powerful reminder: "And obey Allah and His Messenger, if you are true believers." True faith is not merely a claim on the tongue; it is a living reality that manifests in obedience. If you genuinely believe in Allah and His Messenger, your faith will naturally drive you to submit to their commands, to avoid discord, and to prioritize the collective good over personal desires. Faith and obedience are inseparable—one leads to the other.
