📖 English Meaning
And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Phrases:

  • Al-Ashhur al-Hurum (الأشهر الحُرُم): The sacred months — here, specifically the four months of respite granted to the polytheists who had broken their treaties.
  • Insalakha (انسلخ): To pass away, elapse, or come to an end — literally, to shed or slip out of something, like a snake shedding its skin.
  • Khudhuhum (خُذُوهُمْ): Take them as captives or prisoners of war.
  • Ahsuru hum (احْصُرُوهُمْ): Besiege them, confine them, and cut off their escape.
  • Marsad (مَرْصَد): A vantage point, ambush spot, or place of observation on a road where one lies in wait for the enemy.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

When the four sacred months — the period of safety and truce granted to those polytheists who violated their covenants — have fully elapsed, the command of Allah is clear and decisive: confront the enemies of Allah wherever you find them. This is not a call to blind aggression, but a measured response to those who broke their promises and continued their hostility against the Muslim community. The believers are instructed to strike with strength, to take them as captives, to besiege them in their strongholds, and to lie in wait for them on every road and passage — leaving them no avenue of escape or refuge.

Yet — and here lies the beauty and mercy of Islam — the very same verse that commands severity opens the door wide to peace and forgiveness. The moment these people turn back from their shirk (polytheism), sincerely repent to Allah, establish the prayer (Salah), and pay the obligatory charity (Zakah) — signs of genuine faith and submission — their path is to be left free. They are no longer enemies but brothers and sisters in Islam, entitled to the same rights and protections as any Muslim.

This is the balance of justice and mercy in the Qur'an. The severity is not for its own sake; it is a necessary measure against those who persist in hostility and treachery. But the moment sincerity appears, the sword is sheathed, and the arms of the community open wide. Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful — His forgiveness encompasses all who turn to Him in true repentance, regardless of their past.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate the profound mercy embedded in this verse. Even in the context of war and conflict, the Qur'an establishes repentance and righteous action as the ultimate goal. The aim is not annihilation but guidance — not destruction but redemption. How many people throughout history have found their way to Islam through this very verse, witnessing that even the most severe commands are tempered with the promise of forgiveness?

This teaches us that no matter how far one has strayed, the door of Allah's mercy is never closed. The same Lord who commands justice also promises pardon. The same God who warns of consequences also welcomes the penitent. If you have made mistakes, if you have broken promises, if you have lived far from Allah — know that His mercy is greater than your sins. Return to Him, establish your connection with Him through prayer, purify your wealth through charity, and you will find Him waiting with open arms. This is the beauty of Islam: it never abandons hope for anyone, and it never closes the door of return.

📜 Verse 3-7 — At-Tawbah

And [it is] an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah is disassociated from the disbelievers, and [so is] His Messenger. So if you repent, that is best for you; but if you turn away - then know that you will not cause failure to Allah. And give tidings to those who disbelieve of a painful punishment.
Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].
And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.
How can there be for the polytheists a treaty in the sight of Allah and with His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at al-Masjid al-Haram? So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].
