Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse reveals the profound mercy and justice of Islam, even in the context of conflict. If any polytheist—one of those whose lives and property were made permissible to take due to their hostility and breach of treaties—comes to you, O Messenger, seeking protection and safety, then you must grant him that protection without hesitation. The purpose is not to harm him or turn him away, but to give him the opportunity to hear the Words of Allah, the Qur’an, so that the truth may reach his heart and mind clearly. He is to be given a safe passage to listen to the recitation of the Qur’an and learn about the teachings of Islam, free from fear or pressure.
After he has heard the message, if he chooses not to embrace Islam, then you must escort him safely to a place where he feels secure—his homeland or the territory of his people—so that he may return unharmed. This is because these people are ignorant of the true nature of Islam; they have not been exposed to its light. Once they hear the Qur’an and understand its call to monotheism, justice, and mercy, there is a real hope that their ignorance will be lifted, and they may willingly embrace the truth.
This verse is a living example of the beauty of Islam: even in times of war, the door to guidance remains open, and the sanctity of human life is upheld. The ultimate goal is not conquest or revenge, but the salvation of souls and the establishment of peace based on knowledge and conviction. How magnificent is this religion that commands its followers to protect even their enemies so they may hear the Word of Allah! It is an invitation to reflect: if such is the treatment of those who oppose Islam, then what immense mercy and compassion does Islam offer to those who seek it sincerely? Let this verse inspire you to appreciate the universal message of the Qur’an—a message that calls all of humanity to light, knowledge, and eternal success.
