Then We made you successors in the land after them so that We may observe how you will do.

Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
Khalā’if (خَلَائِف): Successors, inheritors, or those who come after others to take their place.
Min baʿdihim (مِن بَعْدِهِم): After them — referring to the destroyed nations of the past.
Li-nanẓura (لِنَنظُرَ): So that We may see — meaning to test and observe, for Allah’s knowledge is eternal, but this is a trial of action.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O people! After destroying the disbelieving nations of old — those who rejected their messengers and persisted in corruption — Allah made you their successors on this earth. You inherited their lands, their resources, and their civilizations. But this inheritance was not a mere gift of honor; rather, it was a profound test. Allah placed you in their position to see how you would act: would you learn from their fate and obey your Lord, or would you repeat their mistakes and follow your desires? Would you use these blessings for good or for evil? Your deeds — whether righteous or wicked — will determine your reward or punishment, just as it was with those before you. This is a divine examination of your choices, and every action you take is being observed and will be accounted for.
Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse is a wake-up call for every generation. Allah is telling us: “You are not here by accident; you are here as successors, carrying a responsibility.” The earth is a trust, and your time in it is limited. Look at the ruins of past nations — where are their palaces and armies now? They were stronger than you, yet they perished because of their sins. So seize this opportunity before your time runs out. Every good deed you do is a seed you plant for your own salvation, and every sin is a burden you carry. Allah is not in need of your worship — you are in need of His mercy. Let the fate of those before you be a lesson, and let your actions today be a reason for your success tomorrow. The door of repentance is open, and the race is still running — so run towards what pleases your Lord before the final hour arrives.
And when affliction touches man, he calls upon Us, whether lying on his side or sitting or standing; but when We remove from him his affliction, he continues [in disobedience] as if he had never called upon Us to [remove] an affliction that touched him. Thus is made pleasing to the transgressors that which they have been doing
And We had already destroyed generations before you when they wronged, and their messengers had come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe. Thus do We recompense the criminal people
And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Bring us a Qur'an other than this or change it." Say, [O Muhammad], "It is not for me to change it on my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."
Say, "If Allah had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you, for I had remained among you a lifetime before it. Then will you not reason?"
