Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Qurūn (الْقُرُونَ): Nations and communities of the past, generation after generation.
- Ẓalamū (ظَلَمُوا): They committed injustice and transgression, primarily through disbelief and rejection of the truth.
- Al-Bayyināt (الْبَيِّنَاتِ): Clear proofs, evident miracles, and unmistakable signs that demonstrate the truthfulness of the messengers.
- Al-Mujrimūn (الْمُجْرِمِينَ): The criminals, those who persist in sin and transgression against Allah’s commands.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most High, addresses the disbelievers of Makkah and all of humanity with a profound lesson from history: He destroyed the nations that came before you when they committed injustice—and the greatest injustice is associating partners with Allah and rejecting His messengers. Those nations were not destroyed out of ignorance or haste; rather, messengers were sent to them with clear proofs, undeniable miracles, and compelling evidence that left no room for doubt. Yet, despite all of this, they still refused to believe. Their hearts were sealed, their arrogance prevailed, and they chose stubbornness over guidance. So Allah’s decree of destruction befell them, and He made them a lesson for those who would reflect.
This is the sunnah (divine way) of Allah that never changes: whoever persists in disbelief and criminal behavior, even after the truth has been made crystal clear to them, will face the same fate. The punishment of the past nations was not merely a historical event—it is a living warning for every generation, including ours. Just as those nations were destroyed for their crimes, so too will every criminal people who reject the truth be dealt with justly.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. Allah is telling you that He does not punish without warning. He sends messengers, He reveals scriptures, and He shows signs—all out of His immense mercy—so that you may find the path to salvation. The destruction of past nations was not because Allah desired their ruin for its own sake, but because they closed their eyes to the light after it was brought to them.
This is a message of hope and a warning at the same time. The door of repentance is open for you today. You have the Qur’an, you have the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and you have the clarity of the truth before you. Do not be like those who saw the signs and still turned away. Embrace the mercy of Allah before the decree of justice overtakes you. Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful to those who turn back to Him, but His justice is certain for those who persist in wrongdoing.
Let the fate of past nations be a reminder that no power, wealth, or status can protect you from Allah’s decree. The only true protection is faith, sincerity, and obedience to your Lord. Take this opportunity today—before it is too late—to submit to Allah, follow His messengers, and live a life that earns His pleasure. For indeed, the Hereafter is better and more lasting for those who believe and do righteous deeds.
