Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Wa la ana 'abidun" — "Nor am I a worshipper" — meaning, I will not worship now or in the future.
- "Ma 'abadtum" — "what you have worshipped" — referring to the idols and false deities the disbelievers of Quraysh worshipped.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare clearly and decisively to the disbelievers: "Nor am I a worshipper of what you worship." This is a firm statement of separation from their false gods and idols — whether those be statues, stones, or any other object of worship besides Allah alone.
The meaning here is twofold: First, the Prophet does not worship their idols at all, now or ever. Second, even in the manner of worship, he does not follow their corrupt practices — because his worship is purely and sincerely for Allah alone, free from any association of partners (shirk). The verse emphasizes that there is no compromise in matters of faith: a believer cannot mix the worship of Allah with the worship of anything else, regardless of time, place, or circumstance.
This declaration came as a direct response to the Quraysh’s proposal that the Prophet and the believers should worship their gods for a year, and they would worship Allah for a year — a false offer of mutual concession. Allah rejected this completely, teaching us that truth and falsehood can never be merged, and that a Muslim’s loyalty is solely to Allah, not to the false objects of worship of any people.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim: your faith is your identity, and your worship is your honor. Just as the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood firm in the face of pressure and temptation, we too must hold fast to our worship of Allah alone — not imitating the ways of those who associate partners with Him, nor compromising our beliefs for the sake of acceptance or convenience. True success lies in purity of worship, and Allah promises that those who worship Him sincerely will find peace in this life and eternal bliss in the Hereafter. Let this verse strengthen your resolve: you are a servant of Allah, and that is the noblest title of all.
