Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَعْثَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ — We caused people to discover them, to stumble upon their location.
- يَتَنَازَعُونَ — They were disputing and arguing among themselves.
- بُنْيَانًا — A structure or building (to seal off the cave).
- غَلَبُوا عَلَى أَمْرِهِمْ — Those who prevailed in the matter, i.e., the people of influence and authority.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Just as We caused them to sleep for many years and then awakened them — a miracle that defies all natural laws — so too did We cause the people of that city to discover them, for a profound divine purpose: that they might know with certainty that Allah’s promise is true, and that the Hour (the Day of Resurrection) is beyond any doubt. The very existence of these young men, preserved alive without food or drink for over three centuries, was a living proof that the One who could sustain them and bring them back after such a long slumber is certainly able to raise the dead and bring them to account.
At that time, the people who discovered them were themselves divided in their opinions about the resurrection — some affirming it, others denying it. So Allah made the discovery of the People of the Cave a decisive argument for the believers against the disbelievers. When the young men eventually passed away, the people began to dispute among themselves about what to do with them. One group said: "Build a wall over their cave and leave them — their Lord knows best about them." But those who held authority and influence in the matter said: "We will surely take a place of worship over them," intending to build a mosque at the entrance of the cave to honor them and to serve as a reminder of this great sign.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the magnificence of this story. Allah, the Almighty, who controlled the sleep of these young men for centuries and then awakened them at the exact moment their city had transformed into a community of believers, is the same Allah who controls your life, your breath, and your destiny. If He can preserve bodies without food for 309 years, can He not resurrect you after death? Can He not bring you forth from your grave on the Day of Judgment?
This verse is a living testimony that the promise of Allah is true, and that the Hour is coming without any doubt. Let this story strengthen your faith and fill your heart with certainty. Let it remind you that no matter how long the night of trials may seem, the dawn of Allah's help is near. And let it inspire you to be like those young believers — firm in your faith, courageous in your conviction, and willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of Allah.
But also heed the warning embedded in this story: the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sternly prohibited taking graves of prophets and righteous people as places of worship, and he cursed those who do so. For this is the path to shirk (associating partners with Allah) and the very innovation that led previous nations astray. Love the righteous, honor them, but direct all worship to Allah alone — for He alone deserves it, and He alone can benefit or harm you.
