- مِرَاءً ظَاهِرًا (Mirā'an ẓāhirā): A superficial, apparent argument — one that is based on clear revelation and not delving into unnecessary details.
- وَلَا تَسْتَفْتِ (Wa lā tastafti): Do not seek information or ask for opinions.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the debates that arose among the People of the Book (specifically the Christians of Najran) and others regarding the exact number of the Companions of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf). Some claimed they were three, with their dog being the fourth. Others said they were five, with their dog being the sixth. Both of these groups spoke purely from speculation and guesswork, having no solid proof or divine revelation to support their claims. A third group said they were seven, with their dog being the eighth — and this was the view that aligned with what Allah revealed to His Prophet ﷺ.
Allah then instructs His Messenger ﷺ to respond by saying: "My Lord knows best their number." This is a profound lesson in humility — when it comes to matters of the unseen that Allah has not clearly detailed, the believer's duty is to defer knowledge to Allah, who is All-Knowing. Only a very few people — those whom Allah specifically granted knowledge of this matter — truly knew their exact number.
The verse then provides two important directives:
- Do not argue about them except with a clear, apparent argument — meaning, do not engage in deep, contentious debates about their number or their story beyond what has been revealed to you in the Qur'an. Share what Allah has told you, and stop there. The Qur'anic account is sufficient and authoritative.
- Do not ask any of them (the People of the Book) about their story — because they do not possess certain knowledge of it either. Their accounts are based on hearsay, guesswork, and corrupted scriptures. Why would you ask those who are ignorant about a matter when Allah, the All-Knowing, has already informed you of the truth?
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. In an age of endless speculation, rumors, and unverified information, the Qur'an teaches us to anchor ourselves in certainty. When Allah has spoken on a matter, that is the final word — no amount of human conjecture can add to or override divine revelation.
Notice the beautiful balance here: Allah does not tell us to completely ignore the differing opinions, nor does He command us to engage in futile arguments. Instead, He guides us to the middle path — acknowledge what we know from revelation, remain humble about what we do not know, and avoid wasting time in debates that yield no benefit.
This is a call to prioritize what truly matters: the worship of Allah, the pursuit of beneficial knowledge, and the purification of our hearts. How many hours do we waste arguing over trivial matters of religion or worldly affairs, while our connection with Allah and our service to humanity suffers? Let this verse be a gentle reminder to invest our energy where it counts — in seeking Allah's pleasure, spreading His message with wisdom, and living lives of purpose and sincerity.
The story of the Companions of the Cave itself is a testament to the power of faith — young believers who fled persecution and trusted Allah completely, and Allah honored them with a miraculous sleep that lasted centuries. Their story is not meant to be a subject of endless debate about numbers, but a source of inspiration about the victory of faith over oppression, and the boundless power of Allah over all things.
