📖 English Meaning
The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger and, when they are [meeting] with him for a matter of common interest, do not depart until they have asked his permission. Indeed, those who ask your permission, [O Muhammad] - those are the ones who believe in Allah and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission for something of their affairs, then give permission to whom you will among them and ask forgiveness for them of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Amr Jāmiʿ (أمر جامع): A matter that brings people together, such as congregational prayers (Friday prayer, Eid), jihad, or any consultation concerning the welfare of the Muslim community.
  • Yastaʾdhinūhu (يستأذنوه): They seek his permission to leave.
  • Shaʾnihim (شأنهم): Their personal affairs or needs.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse establishes a beautiful and profound standard of true faith, teaching us the etiquette of being in the company of the Prophet ﷺ and, by extension, the leaders of the Muslim community. Allah declares that the believers—those whose faith is genuine and complete—are the ones who have sincerely believed in Allah and His Messenger. Their faith is not merely a claim on the tongue; it is a reality that manifests in their conduct and respect for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

When these believers are with the Prophet ﷺ in a gathering that unites them for a common purpose—such as jihad, the Friday prayer, the Eid prayers, or any matter of public interest and consultation—they do not simply leave and disperse on their own. Rather, they wait and seek his permission before departing. This is a sign of their respect, discipline, and commitment to the unity of the Muslim community. They understand that the gathering is for a collective benefit, and leaving without permission would disrupt the harmony and undermine the leadership.

Allah then praises those who seek permission, saying that they are the true believers in Allah and His Messenger. Seeking permission is not a burden; it is a badge of honor and a proof of one's faith. The one who asks for leave shows that he values the Prophet's ﷺ authority and does not take his presence lightly. Conversely, the one who slips away without permission demonstrates a weakness in his faith and a lack of respect for the Messenger.

Then comes the divine instruction to the Prophet ﷺ: if they ask your permission for some of their personal affairs, then grant it to whomever you wish among them. The Prophet ﷺ is given the discretion to allow or decline, based on what he sees fit for the individual and the community. And along with granting permission, the Prophet ﷺ is commanded to ask Allah's forgiveness for them, because leaving the blessed company of the Messenger is itself a loss, and they need Allah's mercy to compensate for what they miss.

The verse concludes with a comforting reminder: "Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." This is a door of hope for every believer. Allah knows that His servants have needs and obligations, and He does not hold it against them when they seek permission to attend to their affairs—provided they do so with respect and proper etiquette. His forgiveness and mercy encompass those who strive to balance their duties to Allah, His Messenger, and their worldly responsibilities.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear brother or sister in Islam, look at how beautiful this religion is! It teaches us discipline, respect, and love. The believers are not a chaotic crowd; they are an organized, caring community that honors its leadership and looks after one another. This verse trains us to be people of manners—whether in the mosque, in our workplaces, or in our homes. When you respect your leaders and seek permission in matters that affect the community, you are not just following a rule; you are living out your faith. And when you need to attend to your personal affairs, Islam does not shut the door on you—it opens the door of permission and then showers you with prayers for forgiveness and mercy. This is a religion of balance: devotion to Allah, respect for His Messenger, and compassion for human needs. Embrace this beautiful teaching, and you will find peace in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 60-64 — An-Nur

And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage - there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments [but] not displaying adornment. But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
There is not upon the blind [any] constraint nor upon the lame constraint nor upon the ill constraint nor upon yourselves when you eat from your [own] houses or the houses of your fathers or the houses of your mothers or the houses of your brothers or the houses of your sisters or the houses of your father's brothers or the houses of your father's sisters or the houses of your mother's brothers or the houses of your mother's sisters or [from houses] whose keys you possess or [from the house] of your friend. There is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allah, blessed and good. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses [of ordinance] that you may understand.
Do not make [your] calling of the Messenger among yourselves as the call of one of you to another. Already Allah knows those of you who slip away, concealed by others. So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet's order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment.
Unquestionably, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. Already He knows that upon which you [stand] and [knows] the Day when they will be returned to Him and He will inform them of what they have done. And Allah is Knowing of all things.
