Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse establishes a fundamental principle in Islam: the balance between obedience to parents and obedience to Allah. Allah, the Most Merciful, commands every human being to treat their parents with the utmost kindness, respect, and excellence — in speech, action, and attitude. This is not merely a suggestion; it is a divine injunction, a sacred duty that comes right after the command to worship Allah alone in many places in the Qur'an.

However, the verse immediately draws a clear and crucial boundary: if your parents strive hard to make you associate partners with Allah — to commit shirk, which is the greatest sin and the only sin Allah does not forgive if one dies upon it — then you must not obey them in that. This is because there is no obedience to any created being in disobedience to the Creator. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) affirmed this when he said: "There is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator."

This does not mean you should be harsh or cut ties with your parents. On the contrary, you must still treat them kindly and respectfully, but you cannot compromise your faith for their sake. The story of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) is a powerful example: his mother refused to eat or drink until he abandoned Islam, but he remained firm in his faith while continuing to show her kindness. Eventually, she relented.

The verse concludes with a profound reminder: "To Me is your return, and I shall inform you of what you used to do." This points to the Day of Judgment, when every soul will face the consequences of its deeds — the good and the bad. This is a call to accountability and sincerity, reminding us that our ultimate goal is Allah's pleasure, not the approval of any human being, no matter how close they are to us.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse beautifully illustrates the mercy and wisdom of Islam. It does not ask you to abandon your parents or disrespect them — far from it! Islam elevates the status of parents to an extraordinary degree. But it also protects you from being led astray, even by those you love most. Your faith is your most precious treasure, and Allah, who created you and knows what is best for you, has set the boundaries to safeguard it.

Imagine the beauty of a religion that commands you to be excellent to your parents while also freeing you from any pressure to compromise your belief in the One True God. This is the path of balance and success. When you stand before Allah on the Day of Judgment, you will be asked about your deeds — not about what others pressured you to do. So hold firm to your faith with love and wisdom, and treat your parents with kindness that reflects the light of Islam in your heart. Indeed, in this verse lies a complete guidance for a life of peace, both in this world and the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 6-10 — Al-'Ankabut

And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.
And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.
And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely admit them among the righteous [into Paradise].
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allah, they consider the trial of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allah. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allah most knowing of what is within the breasts of all creatures?
