Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah Almighty decreed that humiliation and disgrace would be an inescapable mark upon the Children of Israel—wherever they may be found, in any time or place, they are struck with lowliness and contempt. This is not a temporary condition but a perpetual one, following them like a shadow. The only exception is when they hold fast to a rope from Allah—meaning the covenant of Islam and submission to Him—and a rope from the people—meaning a pact of protection or security granted by the believers, such as paying the jizyah (tribute) and living under the just rule of Islam. In that case, they may find safety for their lives and wealth.
Moreover, they have incurred Allah’s wrath upon themselves, and poverty and neediness have been stamped upon them as an enduring trait. This severe punishment is a direct consequence of their persistent disbelief in Allah’s signs and revelations, and their heinous crime of killing the prophets who were sent to guide them—without any right or justification. All of this befell them because they disobeyed Allah’s commands and transgressed His limits, persisting in sin and rebellion until it led them to the ultimate corruption of disbelief.
This verse carries a profound lesson for all of humanity: when a people reject divine guidance, oppress the righteous, and persist in transgression, they bring ruin upon themselves. Yet the door of mercy remains open—through sincere faith, repentance, and holding fast to Allah’s covenant, any nation or individual can escape this fate and attain honor in this world and the Hereafter. The humiliation of the Children of Israel is not a matter of race or lineage, but a consequence of their actions—a reminder that true honor lies only in obedience to Allah and following His messengers.
