Word Meanings:

  • Athan (أَذًى): Harm or annoyance, specifically verbal harm such as insults, mockery, or offensive speech.
  • Yuwallukum al-adbar (يُوَلُّوكُمُ الْأَدْبَارَ): They will turn their backs to you, meaning they will flee in defeat.
  • Yunsarun (يُنصَرُونَ): They will be granted victory or support (against you).

Explanation of the Verse:

O believers, Allah gives you a profound reassurance in this verse regarding the people of the Book who oppose you. No matter how intense their hostility or how cunning their plots, they will never be able to cause you real harm in your faith, your honor, or your essential well-being. The only harm they can inflict upon you is superficial—annoying words that reach your ears, such as insults, mockery, or attempts to cast doubt upon your religion. This is a test of your patience and steadfastness, and it is a harm that cannot touch the core of your belief or your relationship with your Lord.

Furthermore, Allah informs you of their true weakness: if they ever dare to fight you on the battlefield, they will turn their backs and flee in utter defeat. They will not be granted victory over you—ever. This is a divine promise from the One who controls all outcomes. History has borne witness to this truth time and again: whenever the believers stood firm in their faith and obeyed their Lord, the enemies of Islam were humiliated and routed, despite their numbers and resources.

This verse is a source of immense comfort and strength for the believer. It teaches us that we should not fear the plots of our enemies, nor be shaken by their words. Our trust must be in Allah alone, for He is the Protector of the believers and the One who grants victory to His righteous servants. So hold your head high, dear believer, and know that with faith comes divine support. The harm of the enemy is but a passing annoyance, while the victory of Allah is eternal and certain. Let this promise fill your heart with courage and your soul with tranquility, for Allah never breaks His word.

📜 Verse 109-113 — Aal-Imran

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And to Allah will [all] matters be returned.
You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.
They will not harm you except for [some] annoyance. And if they fight you, they will show you their backs; then they will not be aided.
They have been put under humiliation [by Allah] wherever they are overtaken, except for a covenant from Allah and a rope from the Muslims. And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allah and have been put under destitution. That is because they disbelieved in the verses of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.
They are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allah during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer].
