Word Meanings:

(Ghashiyahum): Covered or enveloped them from all sides.
(Kadh-zhulal): Like mountains or towering clouds — referring to the immense, overwhelming waves.
(Mukhliseena lahud-deen): Devoting their worship and supplication sincerely to Allah alone, without any partner.
(Muqtasid): One who is moderate — meaning one who keeps his promise partially, but does not fully fulfill the gratitude owed to Allah.
(Khattar): One who is treacherous, constantly breaking covenants and betraying promises.
(Kafur): One who is extremely ungrateful, denying and rejecting the blessings of Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

Imagine yourself on a ship in the middle of a raging sea. The waves rise like mountains, towering over you like dark clouds, crashing from every direction. In that moment of sheer terror, when all means of escape seem lost, something remarkable happens — even the most stubborn disbeliever forgets his idols, forgets his false gods, and cries out to Allah alone, with sincere devotion, promising to be grateful if only he is saved.

This is the scene Allah describes in this verse. When such people are trapped in the depths of the ocean, with waves covering them like shadows, they call upon Allah with pure sincerity — no partners, no intermediaries. Their hearts, in that moment, recognize the truth that there is no savior but Allah.

But here is the tragedy: when Allah, in His mercy, delivers them safely to the shore, they forget their promises. Among them are those who are "moderate" — they keep some of their word but fall short of complete gratitude and true faith. And among them are those who turn away entirely, denying the very signs they witnessed with their own eyes.

Allah then declares that none denies His signs and proofs of His power and oneness except every treacherous, ungrateful person — one who breaks his covenant with Allah, who promised in the hour of need to be a grateful believer, yet when safety returns, he betrays that promise and rejects the blessings he received.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on your own life. How many times have you found yourself in a difficult situation — illness, financial hardship, or fear — and your heart naturally turned to Allah, even if you were neglectful before? And how many times, when relief came, did you slip back into heedlessness?

This verse is a mirror for the human soul. It reminds us that our natural inclination (fitrah) knows the truth — that Allah alone is worthy of worship and gratitude. The problem is not ignorance; it is forgetfulness and ingratitude.

Let this be a turning point for you. Do not be like those who remember Allah only in times of crisis and forget Him in times of ease. Be among those who worship Allah in both hardship and prosperity, who thank Him in both difficulty and comfort. For Allah is the One who saves you from the waves of this world and the waves of the Hereafter. He is the Most Merciful, the Most Kind — and He loves those who are grateful.

Make a firm promise with yourself today: that you will be a servant of Allah in all circumstances, not just when you need Him. For the One who saved you from the depths of the sea is the same One who provides for you on land, and His blessings upon you are countless. Do not be among the treacherous and ungrateful — be among the thankful and faithful.

📜 Verse 30-34 — Luqman

That is because Allah is the Truth, and that what they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand.
Do you not see that ships sail through the sea by the favor of Allah that He may show you of His signs? Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
And when waves come over them like canopies, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, there are [some] of them who are moderate [in faith]. And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous and ungrateful.
O mankind, fear your Lord and fear a Day when no father will avail his son, nor will a son avail his father at all. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth, so let not the worldly life delude you and be not deceived about Allah by the Deceiver.
Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
