Word Meanings:

  • Al-Amanah (الأمانة): The trust — encompassing all religious obligations and duties ordained by Allah, including acts of worship, fulfilling promises, safeguarding what is entrusted to one's care, and keeping secrets.
  • Abayna (أبَيْنَ): They refused and declined.
  • Ashfaqna (أَشْفَقْنَ): They feared and were apprehensive.
  • Dhuluman (ظَلُومًا): Extremely unjust to oneself.
  • Jahulan (جَهُولًا): Extremely ignorant of the consequences and of the gravity of the burden.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, informs us of a profound and majestic truth: He presented the Trust — meaning the religious duties and moral responsibilities placed upon those who are accountable, such as prayer, charity, fasting, fulfilling debts, and safeguarding secrets — to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains. He offered it to them as a choice, and they all refused to bear it, trembling in awe and fear, knowing they could not fully uphold its immense weight and the accountability that comes with it.

Then, Allah presented this same Trust to the human being, who — despite his weakness, limited strength, and tendency toward forgetfulness and injustice — accepted it and undertook to carry it. Yet, the verse describes the human being as *dhuluman* (greatly unjust to himself) and *jahulan* (greatly ignorant of the true magnitude of what he has accepted). This is not a praise of the human being's courage, but rather a gentle admonition and a call to awareness: the human being, in his haste and heedlessness, took on a burden that even the mighty heavens, the vast earth, and the firm mountains feared to carry. This highlights the gravity of our responsibility and the urgent need for us to fulfill it with sincerity, patience, and reliance upon Allah's mercy and guidance.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear brother and sister in humanity, this verse is a magnificent reminder of the honor and the weight that Allah has placed upon us. You have been chosen to carry this Trust — not because you are stronger than the mountains, but because Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has given you the mind to understand, the will to choose, and the heart to love and worship Him. This is your greatest dignity. Do not let this Trust become a burden of regret; rather, let it become a source of eternal success. Every prayer you offer, every honest word you speak, every secret you keep, and every duty you fulfill is a step toward the everlasting gardens of Paradise. The heavens and the earth declined out of fear, but you have been given the chance to rise. Embrace this Trust with joy, seek Allah's help in every moment, and know that He who placed this responsibility upon you will never leave you without His guidance and support. Let your life be a living testimony of gratitude for this divine honor, and let your ultimate reward be the pleasure of your Lord and His eternal mercy.

📜 Verse 70-73 — Al-Ahzab

70يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا
O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.
He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.
[It was] so that Allah may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the men and women who associate others with Him and that Allah may accept repentance from the believing men and believing women. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
