Word Meanings:
- Yumsiku: Holds, withholds, or keeps in place.
- An tazūlā: Lest they cease to exist, move away, or fall out of their place.
- Min ba‘dihi: After Him — meaning after His holding and sustaining of them.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Almighty, declares that He alone is the One who holds the heavens and the earth in their precise positions, preventing them from tilting, collapsing, or drifting away from their ordained courses. This is not a one-time act but a continuous, moment-by-moment preservation. The very existence of the universe, with its immense galaxies, planets, and the earth beneath our feet, is a living testimony to His infinite power and constant care.
Then Allah poses a profound rhetorical challenge: if the heavens and the earth were to deviate or vanish, who — other than Him — could possibly hold them back or restore them? The answer is unequivocally no one. No power, no force, no being in all of creation could intervene. This verse strips away any illusion of self-sufficiency and reminds every soul that we are utterly dependent on Allah’s mercy and might at every single breath.
The verse concludes with two of Allah’s beautiful attributes: Al-Halīm (The Forbearing) and Al-Ghafūr (The All-Forgiving). These names are mentioned here to reassure the believer: despite His absolute power to destroy or punish, Allah chooses to be patient with His creation. He does not hasten punishment for the disobedient; rather, He gives them time to reflect, repent, and return to Him. And when they do turn back sincerely, He forgives them completely, erasing their sins as if they never occurred.
A Call to Reflection and Hope:
Dear reader, look up at the sky and look down at the earth — they are not hanging by chance. They are held by the hands of the Most Merciful. If He can hold the heavens and the earth from falling, then surely He can hold your heart firm upon faith. If He can sustain the universe, He can sustain you through your trials. And if He is Forbearing and Forgiving, then no matter how heavy your sins may be, His door of repentance is wide open. Do not despair of His mercy — for He who holds the cosmos also holds your destiny, and He is waiting for you to turn to Him with a sincere heart.
