And they swore by Allah their strongest oaths that if a warner came to them, they would be more guided than [any] one of the [previous] nations. But when a warner came to them, it did not increase them except in aversion.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Jahda aymanihim: Their most solemn and emphatic oaths, sworn with utmost sincerity and strength.
  • Nadheer: A warner, a messenger sent to caution people against Allah's punishment.
  • Ahda: More rightly guided, more steadfast in following the truth.
  • Nufoor: Turning away, aversion, fleeing from the truth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The Quraysh disbelievers of Makkah made a solemn, emphatic oath in the name of Allah, swearing with all their strength and conviction: "If a warner (a messenger) comes to us, we will surely be more rightly guided than any of the previous nations — the Jews, the Christians, and others." They claimed that had they received a prophet like those who came before, they would have been the foremost in faith, obedience, and righteousness.

Yet when the warner did come — Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), sent by his Lord to caution them against Allah's punishment and to call them to the straight path — what was their response? The arrival of the messenger only increased them in aversion and distance from the truth. They did not fulfill their solemn oath; instead of embracing guidance, they clung even more firmly to falsehood and turned further away from the light.

This verse exposes a profound human weakness: the tendency to make grand claims about what we would do in hypothetical situations, while failing to act when the reality presents itself. The Quraysh had promised, with the strongest oaths, that they would be the best of nations if a warner came to them. But when the warner arrived, their pride, arrogance, and attachment to their ancestral ways prevented them from submitting to the truth.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. How often do we say, "If I had been alive at the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), I would have followed him immediately and supported him wholeheartedly"? Yet when the call to truth comes to us today — through the Qur'an, through sincere scholars, through the beauty of Islamic teachings — do we respond with haste and humility, or do we find excuses to delay, to hesitate, or to turn away?

The Qur'an is our living messenger. Every verse is a call to guidance. Every day is an opportunity to draw closer to Allah. Do not let the same arrogance that afflicted the Quraysh take root in your heart. When truth is clear, respond to it with sincerity and action. Be among those who, when they hear the call of Allah, increase in faith and draw nearer to Him — not among those who turn away and lose the greatest treasure: the guidance of the Almighty.

Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open until the final hour. Do not let pride or procrastination rob you of the eternal success that awaits those who submit to their Lord with a sincere heart.

📜 Verse 40-44 — Fatir

Say, "Have you considered your 'partners' whom you invoke besides Allah? Show me what they have created from the earth, or have they partnership [with Him] in the heavens? Or have We given them a book so they are [standing] on evidence therefrom? [No], rather, the wrongdoers do not promise each other except delusion."
Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold them [in place] after Him. Indeed, He is Forbearing and Forgiving.
And they swore by Allah their strongest oaths that if a warner came to them, they would be more guided than [any] one of the [previous] nations. But when a warner came to them, it did not increase them except in aversion.
[Due to] arrogance in the land and plotting of evil; but the evil plot does not encompass except its own people. Then do they await except the way of the former peoples? But you will never find in the way of Allah any change, and you will never find in the way of Allah any alteration.
Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? And they were greater than them in power. But Allah is not to be caused failure by anything in the heavens or on the earth. Indeed, He is ever Knowing and Competent.
