Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shurakā'akum (your partners): The false deities and idols you associate with Allah in worship.
- Shirk (partnership): A share or participation in the creation and governance of the heavens.
- Bayyinah (clear evidence): A definitive proof or argument.
- Ghurūr (delusion): False promises and deceptive illusions that lead a person to ruin.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, say to these polytheists who worship false gods besides Allah: "Tell me truly—what exactly have these partners of yours created on earth? Have they brought forth any mountain, any river, or any living creature? Or do they share with Allah in the creation of the heavens above? Have We given them a scripture that clearly authorizes their worship of these idols, so that they stand upon undeniable proof from it?"
The answer is an emphatic no on all counts. They possess no creative power, no partnership in the dominion of the universe, and no divine revelation sanctioning their false worship. Their entire belief system rests upon nothing but empty promises—the leaders among them deceive their followers with vain hopes and illusions, promising intercession, victory, or salvation that will never materialize.
This verse strikes at the very heart of shirk (polytheism) by challenging its intellectual foundations. It invites every rational person to reflect: How can one bow down to beings that have created nothing, own nothing, and possess no authority whatsoever? The universe, with its majestic order and intricate design, testifies to the sole Creatorship of Allah—the One who originated the heavens and the earth without any partner or assistant.
Dear reader, this divine challenge is not merely a historical argument against the idolaters of Makkah; it is a timeless call to purify your heart from every form of false dependence. When you place your trust in wealth, status, or human beings as if they were ultimate sources of benefit and harm, you are, in essence, falling into the same trap. The only true refuge is Allah—the Creator, the Sustainer, the Owner of all that exists. His promise is true, His help is certain, and His mercy encompasses all things. Turn to Him alone, and you will find peace that no false hope can ever provide.
