📖 English Meaning
You will find others who wish to obtain security from you and [to] obtain security from their people. Every time they are returned to [the influence of] disbelief, they fall back into it. So if they do not withdraw from you or offer you peace or restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you overtake them. And those - We have made for you against them a clear authorization.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يَأْمَنُوكُمْ (ya'manūkum): seek security and safety from you by pretending to believe.
  • يَأْمَنُوا قَوْمَهُمْ (ya'manū qawmahum): seek security from their own (disbelieving) people by showing them disbelief.
  • الْفِتْنَةِ (al-fitnah): here refers to disbelief, shirk, and being drawn back into hostility against the believers.
  • أُرْكِسُوا فِيهَا (urkisū fīhā): they were plunged headlong into it, i.e., they fell back into disbelief and evil wholeheartedly.
  • يَعْتَزِلُوكُمْ (ya'tazilūkum): withdraw from you, keep away from fighting you.
  • السَّلَمَ (as-salam): peace, submission, and reconciliation.
  • ثَقِفْتُمُوهُمْ (thaqiftumūhum): you find them, capture them, or overpower them.
  • سُلْطَانًا مُبِينًا (sultānan mubīnan): a clear, evident authority and justification.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers, Allah is revealing to you the reality of yet another group of people — a treacherous bunch of hypocrites who play both sides. They come to you with words of faith on their tongues, saying, "We believe," so that you might spare them and grant them safety. But when they return to their own disbelieving people, they show them loyalty and disbelief, saying, "We are with you," so that they may also feel secure among them. They are double-faced, seeking safety from both camps without truly belonging to either.

Whenever they are called back to disbelief, shirk, or hostility against you, they plunge into it headfirst — not reluctantly, but eagerly, as if it is their natural state. Their hearts are deeply rooted in hypocrisy, and their apparent faith is nothing but a shield to protect their worldly interests.

Now, Allah gives you a clear ruling regarding such people: If they do not withdraw from you, offer you genuine peace and submission, and restrain their hands from fighting you — then you are commanded to seize them and kill them wherever you find them. This is not an act of aggression; it is a necessary measure of self-defense and justice against those who betray your trust, secretly conspire against you, and pose a continuous threat to the Muslim community.

And Allah declares: "For such people, We have given you a clear and undeniable authority over them." This means that your right to take action against them is firmly established in divine law. Their treachery, their broken promises, and their persistent hostility have stripped them of any protection. You are not acting unjustly; rather, you are executing the command of the All-Wise, who knows their hidden intentions and their corrupt hearts.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the importance of sincerity and clarity in faith. Islam is a religion of truth and honesty — it has no room for duplicity or hypocrisy. A believer's word should be their bond, and their actions should reflect their inner convictions. The hypocrites described here tried to please everyone, but in doing so, they pleased no one — not Allah, not the believers, and ultimately not even themselves.

As Muslims, we are called to be people of integrity. When we say we believe, let our actions prove it. When we make peace, let us honor it. And when we face hostility, let us respond with courage and justice, trusting in Allah's wisdom. This verse also reassures us that Allah never leaves His believers without guidance. He clarifies every situation, exposes every hidden enemy, and grants us the authority to protect our faith and our community. So hold firm to the Qur'an, for in it lies your light, your strength, and your ultimate success.

📜 Verse 89-93 — An-Nisa

They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allah. But if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper.
Except for those who take refuge with a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty or those who come to you, their hearts strained at [the prospect of] fighting you or fighting their own people. And if Allah had willed, He could have given them power over you, and they would have fought you. So if they remove themselves from you and do not fight you and offer you peace, then Allah has not made for you a cause [for fighting] against them.
And never is it for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mistake - then the freeing of a believing slave and a compensation payment presented to the deceased's family [is required] unless they give [up their right as] charity. But if the deceased was from a people at war with you and he was a believer - then [only] the freeing of a believing slave; and if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty - then a compensation payment presented to his family and the freeing of a believing slave. And whoever does not find [one or cannot afford to buy one] - then [instead], a fast for two months consecutively, [seeking] acceptance of repentance from Allah. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
But whoever kills a believer intentionally - his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.
