📖 English Meaning
Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." The angels will say, "Was not the earth of Allah spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

The angels take their souls at death.
Those who wrong themselves by staying among disbelievers and abandoning obligatory migration (hijrah).
Weakened and oppressed, unable to practice their religion freely.
In what condition were you regarding your religion?
Their final abode.
A destination or outcome.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse addresses a specific group of people who had embraced Islam in Makkah but chose to remain among the disbelievers when migration (hijrah) became obligatory. They did not join the Muslim community in Madinah, and when the disbelievers marched to the Battle of Badr, these individuals were compelled to accompany them and were killed alongside the disbelievers.

When the angels come to take their souls at death, they find them in a state of self-oppression—having wronged themselves by neglecting the duty of migration and remaining in a land where they could not freely practice their faith. The angels rebuke them, asking: "In what condition were you regarding your religion? What did you achieve by staying among the disbelievers?"

The people reply with a weak excuse: "We were oppressed and powerless in the land, unable to protect ourselves or practice our faith freely."

But the angels counter their excuse with a powerful argument: "Was Allah's earth not spacious enough for you to migrate to another land where you could safeguard your religion and your dignity?" This is a clear rejection of their feeble justification—for the earth of Allah is vast, and there is always a place where a believer can worship Allah freely and live with honor.

The verse concludes with a stern warning: "Their abode will be Hellfire—and what an evil destination!" This is a severe consequence for those who abandon obligatory duties without a valid excuse, especially when they have the physical ability and means to migrate.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It teaches us that our faith is not merely a matter of words—it requires action, sacrifice, and sometimes leaving behind our homes, families, and wealth for the sake of Allah. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ understood this deeply; they left everything they loved in Makkah to build a new life in Madinah, all for the sake of preserving their faith and obeying their Lord.

This verse also reminds us that excuses will not save us on the Day of Judgment. We must be honest with ourselves: Are we truly doing everything we can to practice our religion? Are we willing to make difficult choices when our faith is at stake? Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, but He also expects us to strive with what He has given us.

The good news is that Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is always open. If you find yourself in a situation where you have fallen short, do not despair—return to Allah, strengthen your resolve, and take practical steps to improve your condition. The earth of Allah is spacious, and the path of righteousness is always available to those who sincerely seek it.

May Allah grant us the strength to prioritize our faith above all worldly concerns, and may He protect us from being among those who wrong themselves. Ameen.

📜 Verse 95-99 — An-Nisa

Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]. But Allah has preferred the mujahideen over those who remain [behind] with a great reward -
Degrees [of high position] from Him and forgiveness and mercy. And Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
Except for the oppressed among men, women and children who cannot devise a plan nor are they directed to a way -
For those it is expected that Allah will pardon them, and Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving.
