Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Afaq (الْآفَاقِ): The horizons — referring to the distant regions of the earth and the heavens, the vast expanses of creation.
- Anfusihim (أَنفُسِهِمْ): Their own selves — the inner world of the human being, including the body, soul, and the wonders of their own creation.
- Yatabayyana (يَتَبَيَّنَ): Becomes clear and evident, leaving no room for doubt.
- Shahid (شَهِيد): Witness — One who sees, knows, and testifies to the truth of all things.
The Interpretation:
Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, makes a profound promise to the disbelievers who reject the truth: He will show them His signs in the external world — in the horizons of the earth and heavens. These signs include the magnificent conquests of Islam, the spread of its light across distant lands, the downfall of tyrants, the rise of justice, and the awe-inspiring phenomena of the universe: the celestial bodies, the changing seasons, the rain that revives dead earth, and the countless marvels of creation that point to a single, wise Creator.
And He will also show them signs within their own selves — in the intricate design of their bodies, the miracle of their own existence, the beating of their hearts, the functioning of their minds, and the events that unfold in their own lives. Indeed, the conquest of Makkah and the victory at Badr were among these internal signs that the early Muslims witnessed firsthand.
All of this continues until the truth becomes absolutely clear to them — until they can no longer deny that the Qur'an is the truth revealed from the Lord of all worlds. The evidence will be so overwhelming that every excuse will vanish, and every doubt will be dispelled.
Then Allah poses a powerful rhetorical question: Is it not sufficient proof for them that your Lord is a Witness over all things? Allah Himself bears witness that the Qur'an is His word and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His messenger. And who could be a greater witness than Allah — the One who sees everything, knows everything, and from Whom nothing is hidden? If they truly sought the truth, this divine testimony alone would be enough.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and look around you. The signs of Allah are everywhere — in the vast skies above, in the earth beneath your feet, and in the very depths of your own being. Your heartbeat, your breath, the complexity of your eyes, the wonder of your brain — all of these are living proofs of a Creator who is All-Wise and All-Knowing. The Qur'an invites you to open your eyes and your heart, for the truth is not hidden — it is shining brightly for all who are willing to see. And when you recognize this truth, you will find peace, purpose, and a connection to your Lord that fills your life with meaning. Let not your heart be hardened, for the signs are calling you — every single day, in every single moment.
