Tafsir (Explanation):
When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ set out for the expedition of Hudaybiyyah, he called upon the Bedouin tribes around Madinah to join him, fearing that the Quraysh might resist his peaceful approach. But many of them made excuses and stayed behind, too afraid to leave their homes and wealth. When the Prophet ﷺ returned safely with the good news of the peace treaty, these very people came to him with hollow apologies on their lips.
Allah tells His Messenger ﷺ: "They will say to you, O Prophet — those who were left behind among the Bedouins — 'Our wealth and our families occupied us, so ask forgiveness for us.'" They claimed that tending to their money and children had prevented them from accompanying you. But Allah exposes their true state: "They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts." Their words were mere lip service — they did not truly regret their disobedience, nor did they genuinely care about the Prophet's supplication for them. Their excuses were nothing but a mask for cowardice and hypocrisy.
Then Allah commands the Prophet ﷺ to respond to them in a way that shatters their false pretexts: "Say: Who can protect you from Allah in anything if He intends for you harm or intends for you benefit?" In other words, if Allah had decreed that you would be harmed by going out with me, your staying behind would not have saved you. And if He had decreed good for you, your absence would not have deprived you of it. Your wealth and families could not have shielded you from Allah's will — so why did you let them become a barrier between you and obedience?
The verse concludes with a profound reminder: "Rather, Allah is ever, of what you do, Aware." He knows the secrets of your hearts and the reality of your intentions. Your excuses may fool people, but they cannot deceive the All-Knowing Creator. Nothing is hidden from Him — not your outward actions, nor the inner motives behind them.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, this verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us. How often do we let our worldly concerns — our jobs, our families, our possessions — become excuses for neglecting our duties to Allah? We say, "I was too busy," "I had no time," "My responsibilities kept me away." But the One who gave us all these blessings knows the truth of our hearts. He knows whether we truly intended to obey but were genuinely unable, or whether we simply preferred our comfort over His command.
Let this be a reminder: Allah does not need our excuses — He needs our sincerity. When you intend to do good, do it wholeheartedly. When you fall short, be honest with yourself and turn back to Him in genuine repentance. For Allah is All-Aware of every intention, every effort, and every excuse. And He is Most Forgiving to those who truly seek His pardon with truthful hearts. May Allah make us among those who are sincere in word and deed, and may He protect us from the hypocrisy of saying what we do not mean. Ameen.
