Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse was revealed in the context of the Pledge of Ridwan (the Pledge of Satisfaction) at Hudaybiyyah, where the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ pledged their allegiance to him, vowing not to flee from battle and to stand firm in support of the truth. Allah, the Exalted, clarifies that this pledge was not merely to the Prophet ﷺ as a man, but it was a pledge made directly to Allah Himself. The Prophet ﷺ was the representative of Allah’s command, and their oath was a transaction with their Lord — they gave their lives and their word in exchange for Paradise.
Allah then says: "The Hand of Allah is above their hands." This is a profound statement of divine presence and witness. It means that Allah was with them, seeing them, hearing their words, and knowing what was in their hearts. He was the ultimate witness to their covenant, and His power and care encompassed them. This affirms Allah’s attribute of "Hand" in a manner befitting His majesty — without any resemblance to creation and without asking "how." It is a reminder that no matter how great the gathering or solemn the oath, Allah is the Ever-Watchful, the All-Knowing, and His support is with those who are sincere.
Then Allah addresses the consequences of human choice: "Whoever breaks his pledge, breaks it only to his own detriment." If a person violates this sacred covenant, the harm returns upon themselves — they lose the reward, incur sin, and distance themselves from Allah’s mercy. Allah is in no need of their allegiance, nor does their betrayal harm Him in the least. It is purely a loss for the one who turns away.
On the other hand: "And whoever fulfills what he has covenanted with Allah, He will grant him a mighty reward." This is a promise of immense generosity. The one who remains steadfast, who honors their word, who stands firm in supporting the truth and the religion of Allah — for them is a reward beyond imagination: Paradise, eternal bliss, and the pleasure of Allah, which is the greatest of all rewards.
A Call to Faith and Action:
Dear believer, reflect on the greatness of this verse. When you commit to Allah — whether through prayer, patience, or striving in His cause — you are not doing a small thing. You are making a transaction with the King of all kings. Allah’s hand is above your hand; He sees your effort, He hears your supplication, and He knows your sincerity. No act of goodness is lost, and no covenant is forgotten.
So be among those who fulfill their promises to Allah. Do not be like those who break their word and lose everything. Stand firm, be patient, and trust in the promise of your Lord. The reward is not merely great — it is *mighty*, and it is eternal. Let this verse fill your heart with hope and determination, for Allah never breaks His promise, and He is the Best of Rewarders. Embrace Islam with a sincere heart, honor your covenant with your Creator, and you will surely find His mercy and generosity beyond all measure.
