Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Boora (بُورًا): A people who are utterly destroyed, ruined, or perished—devoid of any goodness or benefit.
- Zanna al-Saw’ (ظَنَّ السَّوْءِ): An evil assumption or ill thought—specifically, thinking badly of Allah and His Messenger.
- Yanqalib (يَنقَلِب): To return or turn back.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse addresses those who made excuses for not joining the Prophet (peace be upon him) on his journey, claiming they were preoccupied with their wealth and families. Allah refutes this pretext entirely, revealing the true corruption hidden in their hearts.
The reality was far worse than mere negligence: they harbored the dark conviction that the Messenger of Allah and the believers with him would be utterly annihilated—that they would never return to their families in Madinah. This poisonous thought was not merely a passing doubt; it was beautified and made appealing in their hearts, most likely by Satan, who adorned this evil expectation until it took firm root within them.
Beyond this, they entertained an even graver misjudgment: they thought evil of Allah Himself—that He would not grant victory to His Prophet and His faithful companions over their enemies. This was not a minor lapse but a profound failure of faith, for a true believer never despairs of Allah’s help, nor doubts His promise to support His righteous servants.
Allah concludes by describing them as "a people doomed to ruin" —meaning they had rendered themselves utterly useless for any good. Their evil assumptions and abandonment of the Messenger had stripped them of spiritual vitality, leaving them barren of faith and virtue, like land that can produce no harvest.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. It warns us against the subtle whispers of Satan that make us think ill of Allah’s promises or doubt His support for His cause. How often do we, too, allow fear and pessimism to overshadow our trust in Allah? How often do we let worldly concerns—wealth, family, comfort—distract us from standing with truth and righteousness?
The companions who went with the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed their complete trust in Allah, and Allah honored them with victory and return. Those who stayed behind, consumed by evil assumptions, were left with nothing but regret and ruin. Let this be a reminder: never underestimate Allah’s help, never doubt His promise, and never let Shaytan decorate your heart with despair. For Allah is with those who believe, and He never abandons those who strive in His path.
