📖 English Meaning
Say to those who remained behind of the bedouins, "You will be called to [face] a people of great military might; you may fight them, or they will submit. So if you obey, Allah will give you a good reward; but if you turn away as you turned away before, He will punish you with a painful punishment."

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mukhallafūn (المُخَلَّفِينَ): Those who were left behind — i.e., the Bedouin Arabs who excused themselves and refused to join the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the journey to Hudaybiyyah.
  • Al-Aʿrāb (الأَعْرَابِ): The desert-dwelling Bedouins, as opposed to the settled city dwellers.
  • Ūlū Baʾs Shadīd (أُولِي بَأْسٍ شَدِيدٍ): People of great might and formidable strength in warfare.
  • Yuslimūn (يُسْلِمُونَ): They submit and enter Islam (peacefully, without fighting).
  • Tawallaw (تَتَوَلَّوْا): You turn away and refuse to obey.
  • ʿAdhāban Alīman (عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا): A painful, agonizing punishment.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Prophet, tell those Bedouin Arabs who stayed behind and refused to march with you to Makkah: A time will surely come when you will be called to fight a people of immense courage and formidable power in battle — a people so mighty that you will either fight them until they submit to Islam, or they will embrace Islam willingly without a fight. There is no third option: it is either the sword or submission to the truth.

If you obey Allah and respond to this call with sincerity and courage, He will grant you a beautiful reward — both the spoils of victory in this world and the eternal bliss of Paradise in the Hereafter. But if you turn away and refuse to obey, just as you turned away before when you lagged behind on the journey to Hudaybiyyah, then Allah will punish you with a painful torment that you cannot escape.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Allah tests His servants with calls to sacrifice and struggle. The one who responds with obedience is honored with divine reward, while the one who hesitates or retreats faces the consequences of his own choice. The call to truth and justice will always come — the question is whether we will rise to meet it or shrink from it.

Dear Muslim, see how your Lord opens the door of honor before you! He does not ask you to face the enemy alone — He promises you His support, His reward, and His Paradise. The companions of the Prophet understood this, and they never hesitated when the call came. Let this be your example: when the call to truth comes, be among the first to respond, for the reward of the obedient is beautiful indeed, and the punishment of the negligent is severe. Choose the path of honor and victory, and never be among those who turn away.

📜 Verse 14-18 — Al-Fath

And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
Those who remained behind will say when you set out toward the war booty to take it, "Let us follow you." They wish to change the words of Allah. Say, "Never will you follow us. Thus did Allah say before." So they will say, "Rather, you envy us." But [in fact] they were not understanding except a little.
Say to those who remained behind of the bedouins, "You will be called to [face] a people of great military might; you may fight them, or they will submit. So if you obey, Allah will give you a good reward; but if you turn away as you turned away before, He will punish you with a painful punishment."
There is not upon the blind any guilt or upon the lame any guilt or upon the ill any guilt [for remaining behind]. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger - He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow; but whoever turns away - He will punish him with a painful punishment.
Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest
