Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-A'mā (الأَعْمَىٰ): The blind person — one who has lost his eyesight.
  • Al-A'raj (الأَعْرَجُ): The lame or crippled person — one who has a physical impairment affecting his ability to walk or move normally.
  • Al-Marīḍ (الْمَرِيضُ): The sick person — one who is afflicted with an illness that prevents him from fulfilling certain duties.
  • Ḥaraj (حَرَج): Sin, blame, restriction, or burden — a narrowness or constraint that results in accountability.
  • Yatawalla (يَتَوَلَّ): Turns away — meaning one who turns away from obedience to Allah and His Messenger, refusing to comply with His commands.

Explanation of the Verse:

This blessed verse brings a profound message of mercy and ease from Allah, the Most Compassionate, to His believing servants. When the command for jihad (striving in the cause of Allah) was revealed, and the believers were called to march forth, some companions who suffered from chronic disabilities and illnesses felt deep distress. They approached the Prophet ﷺ with heavy hearts, asking: "How can we participate in this great virtue while we are unable to fight?" Their sincere concern for missing out on the reward of jihad reflected the purity of their faith.

In response, Allah revealed this verse, lifting the burden from those who are genuinely excused. He declared that there is no sin, no blame, and no restriction upon the blind person who cannot see the battlefield or navigate its dangers, nor upon the lame person whose physical condition prevents him from marching and fighting, nor upon the sick person whose illness weakens his body and hinders his ability to strive. These individuals are excused from the obligation of jihad because Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. This is a beautiful manifestation of Allah's justice — He knows exactly what each person is capable of, and He never holds anyone accountable for what is beyond their power.

This exemption, however, does not mean that those who are excused are left without reward. On the contrary, their sincere intentions and their longing to participate are known to Allah, and He rewards them accordingly. The verse then turns to the two paths that lie before every human being, whether they are excused from jihad or not:

First path — The Path of Obedience: Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger ﷺ — by fulfilling the obligations they are capable of, by following the guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and by submitting their hearts and actions to the will of their Lord — Allah will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow. These are the eternal gardens of Paradise, where rivers of pure water, milk, honey, and wine flow beneath the palaces and trees, where no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever imagined. This is the ultimate success, the eternal bliss that never fades, and the reward that Allah has prepared for His obedient servants.

Second path — The Path of Turning Away: Whoever turns away from obedience to Allah and His Messenger — refusing to follow His commands, neglecting His rights, and rejecting His guidance — Allah will punish him with a painful torment. This is a severe and agonizing punishment, both in this world and in the Hereafter, for those who knowingly and deliberately reject the path of guidance after it has been made clear to them.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, contemplate the profound mercy embedded in this verse. Allah does not demand from you what you cannot do, but He does demand from you what you can do. If you are healthy and able, then strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth, your words, and your deeds. If you are excused from one form of striving, then there are countless other doors of goodness open before you — prayer, charity, kindness, seeking knowledge, and calling others to the truth. Never let your circumstances become an excuse for abandoning obedience altogether.

The gates of Paradise are wide open, and the rivers of eternal bliss await those who obey. But the road to destruction is also clear for those who turn away. Choose today, before tomorrow, the path that leads to everlasting joy. Let your heart be filled with hope in Allah's mercy, and let your actions be filled with sincere obedience. For indeed, Allah's promise is true, His reward is great, and His punishment is severe. May Allah make us among those who hear the call and respond with obedience, and may He admit us into His gardens beneath which rivers flow.

📜 Verse 15-19 — Al-Fath

Those who remained behind will say when you set out toward the war booty to take it, "Let us follow you." They wish to change the words of Allah. Say, "Never will you follow us. Thus did Allah say before." So they will say, "Rather, you envy us." But [in fact] they were not understanding except a little.
Say to those who remained behind of the bedouins, "You will be called to [face] a people of great military might; you may fight them, or they will submit. So if you obey, Allah will give you a good reward; but if you turn away as you turned away before, He will punish you with a painful punishment."
There is not upon the blind any guilt or upon the lame any guilt or upon the ill any guilt [for remaining behind]. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger - He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow; but whoever turns away - He will punish him with a painful punishment.
Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest
And much war booty which they will take. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
