Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Abnā' Allāh" (أبناء الله): Literally "sons of God" — a claim of special filial relationship to Allah.
- "Aḥibbā'uh" (أحباؤه): "His beloved ones" — those uniquely favored and cherished by Him.
- "Maṣīr" (المصير): The final destination or return.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The Jews and Christians made a bold and baseless claim, saying: "We are the children of Allah and His beloved ones." They imagined that their lineage or religious label alone guaranteed them a special status with their Lord, exempting them from accountability. This is a dangerous illusion that the Qur'an decisively refutes.
Allah commands His Messenger (peace be upon him) to challenge them with a logical and piercing question: "Then why does He punish you for your sins?" If you were truly His beloved children, would a loving father punish his own child? Would a beloved one be subjected to the wrath of the One who loves him? History itself testifies against them — they were punished with humiliation, persecution, and even transformation into apes and swine for their transgressions, and they themselves acknowledge that they will face the Fire for a period in the Hereafter. This alone dismantles their claim.
Then comes the decisive correction: "Nay, you are human beings from among those He has created." You are not divine offspring nor uniquely privileged — you are created beings like all of humanity, standing before your Creator on equal footing with everyone else. Your salvation is not guaranteed by your name, your ancestry, or your inherited identity, but by your deeds and your faith. If you do good, you will be rewarded; if you do evil, you will face the consequences.
The verse then establishes the absolute sovereignty and perfect justice of Allah: "He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills." His forgiveness is not random but flows from His infinite mercy and wisdom, and His punishment is not unjust but flows from His perfect justice. He is the sole Owner of the heavens and the earth and everything between them — no one can intercede with Him except by His permission, and no one can challenge His decree.
Finally, the verse concludes with a profound reminder: "And to Him is the final return." Every soul will journey back to its Creator, leaving behind all false claims, all inherited privileges, and all worldly delusions. On that Day, only truth, sincerity, and righteous deeds will matter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us. Do not rely on labels, heritage, or empty claims to define your relationship with Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever is slow in doing good deeds, his noble lineage will not speed him up." Your connection to Allah is built on sincere faith, humble obedience, and heartfelt repentance — not on slogans or self-congratulation. The door of forgiveness is wide open for every sinner who turns back to Allah, and the warning of punishment stands for every arrogant soul who persists in wrongdoing. So seize this precious moment — your Lord is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, and He loves those who return to Him with a pure heart. Do not let pride or false security keep you from the path that leads to His eternal pleasure.
