Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Masih (المسيح): The Messiah, meaning "the anointed one" — a title given to Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him).
- Yamlik (يملك): To possess power or authority over something; to have the ability to prevent or control.
- Yuhlik (يهلك): To destroy or bring about perdition.
- Qadir (قدير): All-Powerful; having absolute power over all things, with nothing beyond His capability.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah Almighty declares in this verse that those who claim that Allah Himself is the Messiah, son of Mary, have committed an act of outright disbelief. This is a severe deviation from the truth, for it elevates a created servant to the status of the Creator — a grave error that contradicts the very essence of monotheism.
Allah then instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to challenge these claimants with a decisive argument: If Jesus were truly divine, as they allege, then who among creation could prevent Allah from destroying Jesus, his mother Mary, and every single being on earth if He so willed? The answer is obvious — no one can. The very fact that Jesus could not protect his own mother from death, nor save himself from the trials of life, proves beyond doubt that he was a human being, a noble prophet and servant of Allah, but never a deity.
The verse then establishes the absolute sovereignty of Allah: To Him alone belongs the dominion of the heavens, the earth, and everything between them. He creates whatever He wills, in whatever manner He chooses — creating Adam without a father or mother, Eve from a father without a mother, and Jesus from a mother without a father. All of this demonstrates His limitless power and wisdom. And Allah is, over all things, All-Powerful — nothing escapes His will, and nothing occurs except by His decree.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every sincere seeker of truth to reflect on the nature of Allah and His creation. How can a being who was born, who ate and drank, who slept and felt pain, and who was ultimately raised by Allah to the heavens — how can such a being be the Lord of the worlds? The true God is He who is self-sufficient, eternal, and unmatched in His attributes. He is the One who gives life and causes death, who creates and destroys, and who alone deserves our worship.
Let this verse be a reminder to us all: the path to salvation lies in pure monotheism — worshipping Allah alone, without partners, and loving His prophets as His honored servants, not as deities. The Christians who elevated Jesus to divinity fell into error, just as others before them had fallen into error by exaggerating the status of their prophets and righteous ones. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has clarified the truth for humanity so that no one may have an excuse. He is the All-Powerful, the All-Wise, and His mercy encompasses all things. So turn to Him with a sincere heart, and you will find Him near, ready to forgive and guide.
