Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Ahl al-Kitab (People of the Book): Refers specifically to the Jews and Christians who received earlier scriptures (the Torah and the Gospel).
- Fatrah (Interval/Period): A long gap or intermission during which no prophet was sent to humanity.
- Basheer (Bringer of Glad Tidings): A messenger who brings good news of Allah's mercy, reward, and Paradise for those who believe and do good.
- Natheer (Warner): A messenger who warns of Allah's punishment and Hellfire for those who disbelieve and persist in evil.
Explanation of the Verse:
O People of the Book—Jews and Christians alike—indeed, Our Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) has come to you. He arrives at a time when the chain of prophethood had been broken for centuries; after Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him), no messenger was sent to guide humanity, and the world was plunged into darkness, ignorance, and deviation from the true path. This long interval, known as the *fatrah*, lasted nearly six hundred years, during which the original teachings of the Torah and the Gospel were lost, distorted, or forgotten.
Why did Allah send this Messenger at this precise time? So that you would have no excuse to stand before your Lord on the Day of Judgment and say, "No bringer of glad tidings came to us, and no warner was sent to us." That excuse is now utterly invalid. The proof has been established, and the argument is settled. Muhammad (peace be upon him) has come as both a *basheer*—announcing the immense reward of Paradise and Allah's boundless mercy for those who believe, repent, and obey—and a *natheer*—warning of the severe punishment of Hellfire for those who reject the truth, persist in arrogance, and follow their desires.
And Allah is All-Powerful over everything. Nothing is beyond His might. From His infinite power, He sent messengers throughout history, and by that same power, He sealed them with Muhammad (peace be upon him), the final and greatest of all prophets. He is fully capable of rewarding the obedient and punishing the disobedient, and no one can escape His justice or His grace.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on the immense mercy of Allah in this verse. He did not leave humanity wandering in confusion without guidance. Even after a long period without prophets, He did not abandon His creation. Instead, He sent a final Messenger—a mercy to all worlds—to illuminate the path, clarify the truth, and rescue souls from darkness. This is a profound demonstration of Allah's love for His servants and His desire for their success.
The door of mercy is still wide open. The Messenger has come, the message is clear, and the invitation is extended to all—Jews, Christians, and everyone else—to embrace the final truth. Do not let pride or tradition hold you back. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) confirmed the core truths of the earlier scriptures: belief in One God, the importance of sincere worship, and the reality of the Hereafter. He came not to destroy but to complete and perfect the message of all previous prophets, including Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them).
So seize this opportunity before it slips away. Respond to the call of the Messenger, believe in him, and follow his guidance. For Allah's power is absolute—He can forgive whom He wills, guide whom He wills, and hold accountable whom He wills. Let today be the day you open your heart to the truth, for there is no greater success than to be among those who answered the call of their Lord and earned His eternal pleasure.
