Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Munafiqun (المنافقون): Those who outwardly profess Islam while inwardly concealing disbelief.
- Nashhadu (نشهد): We bear witness; we testify.
- Kadhibun (كاذبون): Liars; those whose statements contradict their inner reality.
Tafsir (Interpretation):
When the hypocrites—led by figures like Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul and his companions—came to your gathering, O Messenger of Allah, they would declare with their tongues: "We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah." They uttered these words with their lips, yet their hearts were devoid of any such conviction. They spoke what they did not believe, using eloquent oaths and solemn declarations as a mask for their inner rejection.
Allah, the All-Knowing, responds to their claim by affirming the truth that the Prophet ﷺ is indeed His Messenger—a fact established by divine knowledge, not by their testimony. Their witness added nothing to his status, for Allah Himself bears witness to His Messenger's truthfulness. Then, in a powerful turn, Allah declares that the hypocrites are liars—not in their statement that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, for that statement was factually true, but in their claim that they believed it from the depths of their hearts. Their testimony was a lie because it contradicted their inner conviction of disbelief.
The Prophet ﷺ, following divine guidance, accepted their outward profession of Islam and treated them according to what they manifested, leaving their hidden intentions to Allah. This verse serves as a profound lesson for the believers: that hypocrisy is a disease of the heart, and that Allah alone knows what lies within. It also reassures the believers that the truth of Islam does not depend on human acknowledgment, for Allah Himself is the ultimate Witness to His own truth.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a beautiful and reassuring truth: the honor and truth of Islam and its Messenger are established by Allah Himself, not by the approval or testimony of people. No matter how many deny or reject, the truth remains unshaken. And for us as believers, it is a call to sincerity—to ensure that our words always match what is in our hearts, for Allah sees and knows all. Let us strive to be among those whose outward and inward are aligned in devotion to Allah, and let us take comfort in knowing that Allah's witness is sufficient for His cause.
