Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Aymānahum (أَيْمَانَهُمْ): Their oaths or sworn pledges, particularly the false declarations of faith they made.
- Junnah (جُنَّةً): A shield, cover, or protective screen used for self-defense.
- Ṣaddū (صَدُّوا): They turned away or obstructed.
- Sabīl Allāh (سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ): The path of Allah, meaning the religion of Islam, faith, and righteous deeds.
Explanation of the Verse:
The hypocrites have taken their oaths—the very words they utter to claim belief and loyalty—as a shield to protect themselves. By swearing falsely that they are Muslims, they safeguard their lives, their wealth, and their families from being treated as enemies of the faith. They hide behind these empty promises to avoid punishment and to preserve their worldly interests, while their hearts remain full of disbelief.
Yet, this shield is not merely passive. They actively use their position and their deceptive words to block others from the path of Allah. They spread doubt, confusion, and fear among the believers, discouraging people from embracing Islam wholeheartedly and from striving in the way of Allah, whether through faith or jihad. Their aim is to weaken the Muslim community from within, all while pretending to be part of it.
Then Allah declares their deeds utterly evil: "Indeed, evil is what they used to do." Their hypocrisy, their false oaths, and their efforts to mislead others are all abhorrent in the sight of Allah. They have sealed their own hearts through their persistent disbelief, and as a result, they cannot comprehend what is truly good for them—neither in this life nor in the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a profound reminder for every believer to examine the sincerity of their words and actions. Faith is not a mask to be worn for convenience; it is a living truth that transforms the heart and guides the conduct. The hypocrites used their tongues as tools of deception, but the believer is called to be a person of integrity, whose words match their inner convictions and whose deeds reflect their love for Allah.
Let this also be a warning: do not let the fear of worldly loss push you toward insincerity. Stand firm upon the truth, for Allah sees all that is hidden, and His promise of reward for the truthful is far greater than any fleeting gain secured by falsehood. And beware of those who seek to turn you away from the path of Allah—recognize their tactics, and cling to the Qur'an and the Sunnah, for therein lies your protection and your success in this life and the next.
