Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Exalted, informs us in this noble verse that He alone is the Creator of both death and life. Death is not a mere nothingness or an accident; rather, it is a created reality — a specific transition where the soul departs from the body, ending its earthly existence. Life, likewise, is a creation of Allah, the state in which the soul animates the body. Both are under His absolute command and power.
The purpose behind creating these two states is profound and deeply meaningful: to test you, O humanity. Allah did not create you in vain or leave you without purpose. He brought you into this world — and He will take you out of it — to see which of you performs the best deeds. "Best" here means two essential qualities combined: sincerity (ikhlas) — that the deed is done purely for the Face of Allah alone, and correctness (sawab) — that the deed is in accordance with the Sunnah (the prophetic way). A deed that is sincere but not in line with the Prophet's ﷺ guidance is rejected, and a deed that is correct in form but lacking sincerity is also rejected. Both conditions must be met.
This verse is a powerful call to action. It urges you to rush toward obedience and good works, knowing that your life is a limited opportunity — a test with a deadline. It also serves as a stern warning against sin and negligence, for every moment of your life is being observed and will be accounted for.
Then Allah concludes the verse with two of His beautiful names: Al-'Aziz — the Almighty, the One whose power nothing can resist, and who will certainly carry out His judgment over all creation; and Al-Ghafur — the Oft-Forgiving, who forgives the sins of those who turn to Him in sincere repentance. This pairing is a source of immense hope: even though He is All-Powerful and fully capable of punishing, He is also Most Forgiving to those who seek His mercy.
So, dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Your life is a precious gift — use it in what pleases your Creator. Your death is certain — prepare for it with righteous deeds. And never despair of Allah's mercy, for He is Al-Ghafur, ready to forgive all sins for the one who repents. Strive to be among those whom Allah praises as "best in deed," and you will surely attain His pleasure and His Paradise.
