Surah Al-Qalam — Verse 32

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the owners of the garden realized their grave mistake and acknowledged their sin—having resolved to withhold from the poor and needy, and having failed to say "If Allah wills" (In shaa’ Allah)—they turned back to their senses. Their hearts softened, their pride broke, and they spoke these words of sincere hope and repentance: "Perhaps our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. Indeed, we turn to our Lord with longing."

This is the language of true repentance. They did not despair of Allah’s mercy, nor did they insist stubbornly on their wrongdoing. Instead, they combined two essential elements: hope in Allah’s generosity and action—turning to Him sincerely. They acknowledged that the garden was lost, but they did not lose faith in the One who gave it to them in the first place. They knew that the Owner of all things is capable of replacing what was lost with something far better, if only they returned to Him with pure hearts.

The phrase "إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُونَ" (Indeed, to our Lord we turn with longing) is a beautiful declaration of dependence on Allah alone. It shows that when a person truly repents, they do not merely feel regret—they actively turn to Allah, seeking His favor, His forgiveness, and His bounty. They understood that the path to recovery was not through complaining or despair, but through humble supplication and trust in Allah’s infinite mercy.

This story carries a profound lesson for every believer: No matter how great the loss, no matter how severe the mistake, the door of repentance is always open. Allah loves those who turn back to Him, and He is more generous than we can imagine. The very fact that these people spoke these words after their calamity shows that Allah had already begun to guide them—for the ability to repent is itself a mercy from Him.

Dear reader, let this verse inspire you. If you have fallen short, if you have been negligent in your duties toward Allah or toward His creation, do not despair. Say with certainty and hope: "Perhaps my Lord will replace my situation with something better—indeed, I turn to my Lord with longing." For Allah does not turn away a sincere heart, and His compensation for those who repent is always greater than what they lost. The garden of this world is temporary, but the reward of Allah in the Hereafter is everlasting and far superior. So turn to Him now, before it is too late, and let your hope in His mercy be your greatest companion on the path back to Him.
