Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- كَذَٰلِكَ الْعَذَابُ – "Such is the punishment": meaning, in this manner and like this, We punish those who transgress and disobey.
- وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ – "And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater": far more severe, lasting, and intense than any worldly affliction.
- لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ – "If only they knew": had they possessed true knowledge and certainty, they would have refrained from every cause that leads to divine punishment.
Explanation of the Verse:
After narrating the story of the owners of the garden—who were stricken with loss because they withheld what Allah had blessed them with and refused to give the poor their due right—Allah concludes with a universal lesson: "Such is the punishment" (in this life). Just as those garden owners were punished by the destruction of their harvest, so too does Allah punish those who rebel against His commands, whether in Makkah or elsewhere, through defeat, hardship, and deprivation. This is a glimpse of divine justice in the worldly realm.
Then comes the profound warning: "And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater"—far more immense, more severe, and eternal. No worldly calamity, no matter how devastating, can compare to the torment that awaits those who persist in disbelief and sin. The fires of the Hereafter are everlasting, the regret is boundless, and there is no escape.
The verse closes with a compassionate call: "If only they knew." Had they truly understood the magnitude of what awaits them, they would have hastened to repentance, guarded their tongues, purified their hearts, and fulfilled the rights of Allah and His creation. Their ignorance is not an excuse—it is a tragedy, for knowledge is available, and the path to salvation is clear.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a mercy wrapped in a warning. Allah does not wish to destroy us; He wishes to guide us. He shows us the end of those who turned away, so that we may turn back before it is too late. The punishment of this world is temporary—painful, yes, but fleeting. Yet the punishment of the Hereafter is forever. Who would trade an eternity of peace for a moment of heedlessness? Who would risk the gardens of Paradise for the fleeting pleasures of disobedience?
Let this verse awaken your heart. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. He says in another verse: *"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins"* (Az-Zumar 39:53). So return to Him now, with sincerity, before the sun rises from the west and the time for return is over. The choice is yours—and the reward is beyond imagination.
