Qum fa anzir
📖 English Meaning
Arise and warn
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qum (قُمْ): Rise, stand up, or arise — here, it means to get up from one's place of rest or sleep.
  • Fa-andhir (فَأَنذِر): And warn — to caution and alert people, specifically about the consequences of disbelief and the punishment of Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a direct and powerful command from Allah to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), addressing him as "O you wrapped in garments" — a reference to his state of being enveloped in his cloak, likely during the early moments of revelation when he was overwhelmed by the weight of the divine message. Allah instructs him: "Arise from your resting place and warn."

The command is twofold: first, to physically rise from a state of comfort and stillness, and second, to take on the monumental task of warning humanity. The "warning" here is not merely a gentle reminder — it is a call to alert the people, especially the disbelievers of Makkah, about the reality of the Day of Judgment, the terrors of Hellfire, and the severe consequences of persisting in polytheism and sin. It is a summons to turn away from falsehood and embrace the worship of Allah alone.

This verse marks the beginning of the Prophet's public mission after the initial revelation in the cave of Hira. It signifies that the message of Islam is not a private matter but a universal call — one that requires courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication. The Prophet was to stand firm, deliver the truth clearly, and not fear the reactions of those who opposed him.

For the believers, this verse carries a timeless lesson: when Allah grants you knowledge of the truth, you are obligated to act upon it and share it with others. It is a reminder that faith is not passive — it demands action, perseverance, and a willingness to stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful reminder that Islam is a religion of action and responsibility. Just as the Prophet was commanded to rise and warn, every Muslim has a role to play in guiding others toward goodness — whether through words, actions, or simply by living as a positive example. The call to "warn" is not about instilling fear alone; it is about compassionately steering people away from harm and toward the eternal success of Paradise. Let this inspire you to take your faith seriously, to rise from the comfort of indifference, and to share the light of Islam with wisdom and kindness. The Prophet did not rest until he delivered the message — and we, as his followers, are entrusted with the same noble duty, each in our own capacity.
