Translation — Tafsir
Meanings of Key Words:
- Al-Muddaththir (المدثر): The one wrapped up in his garments, specifically referring to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who was enveloped in his cloak at the time of this revelation.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse is a direct call from Allah to His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), addressing him with a tender and affectionate title: "O you who is wrapped up in his garments." This was the state of the Prophet at the moment of the first revelation, when he was overwhelmed by the awe of the angelic encounter in the Cave of Hira and returned home, trembling, asking his noble wife Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) to cover him with a cloak.
Allah addresses him in this intimate manner to calm his heart and prepare him for the great mission ahead. The verse serves as a gentle yet commanding wake-up call: rise from your rest, O Prophet, for the time of comfort has passed. The world is in darkness, and you have been chosen as the lamp that will guide humanity to the light of monotheism.
This single verse marks a turning point in history—the formal commencement of the prophetic mission after the initial revelation of "Read" in Surah Al-Alaq. It is a call to action, to sacrifice, and to unwavering dedication. The title "Al-Muddaththir" itself carries a profound lesson: even in moments of human weakness and vulnerability, Allah's mercy reaches out to elevate His chosen servants to the highest ranks of honor.
A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:
Beloved reader, imagine the honor bestowed upon the Prophet (peace be upon him)—the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of all that exists, calling him with such tenderness and care. This verse teaches us that Allah does not abandon His servants in their moments of fear or uncertainty; rather, He lifts them up and entrusts them with noble purposes.
If you feel wrapped up in the burdens of life, overwhelmed by its trials, or uncertain of your path, remember that Allah knows your state and calls to you as well—not to burden you, but to raise you. The same Lord who commanded His Prophet to rise and warn humanity invites you to rise from the slumber of heedlessness, to purify your heart and your actions, and to dedicate your life to what truly matters: knowing your Creator, worshipping Him alone, and spreading goodness around you.
This verse is a reminder that every Muslim carries a share of this call—to enjoin good, forbid evil, and live with purpose. Let the example of the Prophet inspire you to leave your comfort zone for the sake of truth and to embrace the beautiful mission of being a servant of Allah in this world. The path of faith is not one of ease, but it is the path of ultimate success and eternal bliss.
