Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-ʿAdhāb al-Akbar (الْعَذَابَ الْأَكْبَرَ): The greatest, most severe punishment — referring to the eternal torment of Hellfire, as opposed to the lesser punishment experienced in this worldly life.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse concludes a powerful warning directed at those who turn away from the message of truth. After mentioning the one who disbelieves, turns his back, and rejects the reminder, Allah declares that such a person will face His greatest punishment.
The "greater punishment" is the punishment of the Hereafter — being cast into Hellfire to remain therein forever. This is contrasted with the "lesser punishment" that such disbelievers may already experience in this world: times of famine, defeat in battle, captivity, and other trials that serve as forewarnings. Yet even these worldly afflictions are but a glimpse of what awaits if one persists in arrogance and rejection.
This verse comes as a direct sequel to the previous one, where Allah describes the one who "turns away" from the reminder — not merely out of ignorance, but out of deliberate stubbornness and pride. For such a person, there is no excuse, for the truth has reached them clearly, and they still refused.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the mercy embedded even within this warning. Allah does not hide the consequences — He declares them openly so that you may return to Him before it is too late. The door of repentance remains open until the moment of death. The One who warns you of the greatest punishment is the same One who says, "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53).
The choice is yours: to heed the reminder and earn eternal bliss, or to turn away and face the greatest punishment. Do not let pride or stubbornness rob you of the most precious gift — your salvation. The Quran is not a burden; it is a light. Embrace it, and you will find peace in this life and the next.
