Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Sadaqah (صَدَقَةً): Here it refers to obligatory charity (Zakah) — a purifying payment taken from wealth.
- Tutahhiruhum (تُطَهِّرُهُمْ): Cleanses them from the filth of sins and moral impurities.
- Tuzakkihim (تُزَكِّيهِم): Causes them to grow in righteousness, increases their good deeds, and elevates their rank.
- Salli ‘alayhim (صَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ): Supplicate for them, pray for their forgiveness and well-being.
- Sakanun (سَكَنٌ): Tranquility, comfort, and reassurance for their hearts.
The Interpretation:
O Prophet, take from the wealth of those who have sincerely repented — those who mixed righteous deeds with wrongdoings but then turned back to Allah — a charity (Zakah) that will purify them from the stain of their sins and cleanse their souls from the impurities of miserliness and wrongdoing. Through this charity, they are raised from the ranks of the hypocrites to the ranks of the sincere believers, and their good deeds are multiplied and blessed.
And after taking this charity from them, supplicate for them and ask Allah to forgive them. Indeed, your supplication, O Prophet, brings them tranquility, peace of mind, and reassurance — for they know that the Messenger of Allah has prayed for them, and that prayer is a mercy that settles their hearts and calms their fears.
Allah is All-Hearing of every word and every supplication, and All-Knowing of the intentions hidden within their hearts and the sincerity of their repentance. He will reward each person according to what they have done.
A Da’wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound and beautiful message for every believer: the act of giving charity is not merely a financial transaction — it is a spiritual purification that cleanses the heart, elevates the soul, and draws one closer to Allah. When you give from your wealth for the sake of Allah, you are not losing anything; rather, you are purifying your heart from attachment to worldly possessions and planting seeds of blessing that will grow manifold in this life and the next.
Notice also the tenderness of the Prophet ﷺ — his supplication for the believers brings them peace. Imagine the comfort of knowing that the beloved Messenger of Allah prayed for you! This is the beauty of Islam: it connects the believer’s heart to Allah through acts of worship, through giving, and through the mercy of the Prophet ﷺ. Let this verse inspire you to give generously, to seek purification, and to find tranquility in obedience to Allah.
