Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Jizyah (الجزية): A tax levied on non-Muslims living under the protection of an Islamic state, in exchange for their security, protection, and exemption from military service.
  • ʿAn yad (عن يد): Literally "from the hand," meaning paying it willingly, directly, and in a state of submission, acknowledging the authority of the Islamic state.
  • Ṣāghirūn (صاغرون): Humiliated, subdued, brought low—referring to a state of compliance and acceptance of Islamic rule without arrogance or rebellion.

The Tafsir (Interpretation):

O believers, this is a clear command from your Lord: fight those among the People of the Book—the Jews and the Christians—who persist in their disbelief and refuse to embrace the truth. Their condition is described precisely: they do not truly believe in Allah as the One and Only God, nor do they believe in the Day of Judgment and the accountability that follows. They do not regard as forbidden what Allah and His Messenger have declared forbidden—such as usury, intoxicants, and unlawful meats—and they do not adhere to the religion of truth, which is Islam, the final and complete guidance revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

These are not merely intellectual differences; they are a rejection of the very foundations of faith and morality. Their disbelief is not passive—it is active, and it poses a threat to the Muslim community and the message of truth. Therefore, Allah commands the believers to confront them until they either accept Islam or agree to pay the *jizyah*—a tribute that signifies their acceptance of living under the authority of the Islamic state, in a state of humility and submission, with their own hands, acknowledging that they are no longer in a position of power or arrogance.

This command, however, is not a license for aggression or oppression. It is a directive rooted in justice and the preservation of the Muslim community. The *jizyah* is not a punishment but a contract of protection: in return for this payment, the People of the Book are granted safety, freedom of worship, and the right to live peacefully under the care of the Islamic state, exempt from military service and the burdens of defending the realm. It is a means of establishing order and preventing enmity, while allowing them to live with dignity within the framework of Islamic governance.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the wisdom of this verse. Islam does not call for blind hatred or senseless violence. Rather, it establishes a clear, just, and merciful system for coexistence. The ultimate goal is not to humiliate people, but to remove the barriers of arrogance and falsehood that stand between humanity and the truth. When a person submits to Allah—whether by embracing Islam or by accepting the authority of its law through the *jizyah*—they find peace, security, and a path to salvation.

This verse reminds us of the greatness of Islam: it is a complete way of life that balances justice with mercy, strength with compassion. It calls us to be firm in our faith, yet fair in our dealings. And it invites all of humanity to reflect: is there any religion more comprehensive, more just, and more merciful than the one revealed by the Creator of the heavens and the earth? Open your heart to this truth, and you will find in it the peace your soul has been searching for.

📜 Verse 27-31 — At-Tawbah

Then Allah will accept repentance after that for whom He wills; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
O you who have believed, indeed the polytheists are unclean, so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Haram after this, their [final] year. And if you fear privation, Allah will enrich you from His bounty if He wills. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.
The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah "; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them]. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?
They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.
