Key Words and Their Meanings:
- ʿUzayr (عُزَيْر): The prophet Ezra (peace be upon him), revered by the Jews.
- Al-Masīḥ (الْمَسِيح): The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary (peace be upon him).
- Yuḍāhiʾūn (يُضَاهِئُونَ): They imitate or resemble.
- Qātalahumu Allāh (قَاتَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ): May Allah curse/destroy them—an expression of severe rebuke and condemnation.

Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah Almighty exposes the false claims of two communities who deviated from pure monotheism (Tawḥīd). The Jews, despite receiving the Torah and knowing the truth, claimed that ʿUzayr (Ezra) was the son of Allah—a claim born of their own invention, with no revelation or proof to support it. Similarly, the Christians claimed that the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was the son of Allah, a claim that contradicts the clear message of all prophets, including Jesus himself, who called people to worship Allah alone.
Allah then clarifies that these are nothing but words uttered by their mouths—empty statements devoid of any evidence, knowledge, or divine authority. They are not based on revelation but on blind imitation and inherited falsehood. In making these claims, they resemble the polytheists of earlier nations who also attributed sons and daughters to Allah, such as those who claimed the angels were His daughters. Thus, their error is not new; it is a repetition of ancient misguidance.
Then comes the severe divine rebuke: "Qātalahumu Allāh" (May Allah destroy them)—a powerful expression of condemnation, not a literal prayer for fighting, but a curse and a declaration of their ruin. Finally, Allah asks in astonishment: "How are they turned away?"—how can people, after such clear evidence and sound reasoning, be so deluded as to abandon the obvious truth of Allah's oneness and majesty, and instead follow baseless falsehood?
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a timeless reminder for every seeker of truth: Allah is far above any human attributes, limitations, or offspring. He is the One, the Eternal, the Self-Sufficient—He neither begets nor is born, and there is none comparable to Him. The pure message of Islam restores the original, untainted belief in Allah's absolute oneness, freeing the heart from superstition and blind tradition.
How beautiful is the Qur'an in calling us to use our intellect! It invites us to question inherited beliefs and to return to the natural disposition (fiṭrah) upon which Allah created us—a disposition that recognizes His greatness and submits to Him alone. Let this verse inspire you to seek knowledge, to hold firmly to the truth, and to worship Allah with sincerity, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, who loves those who turn to Him in repentance and faith.
