Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- وَاللَّيْلِ (By the night): Allah swears an oath by the night, one of His magnificent creations.
- إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ (when it covers): When the night spreads its darkness and envelops the earth and everything upon it, concealing all beneath its shadow.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Exalted, opens this chapter with a solemn oath by the night—that time when darkness spreads over the earth, covering mountains, plains, seas, and all that exists beneath its veil. This is not a mere poetic image; it is a divine call to reflect upon the alternation of night and day, a sign of Allah’s absolute power and wisdom. The night, with its stillness and mystery, reminds us of the temporary nature of this worldly life, where things are hidden and uncertain, and it points to the greater reality that Allah alone controls all affairs.
This oath draws our attention to the profound order in creation: the night that brings rest and tranquility, and the day that follows with light and activity. By swearing by such a universal phenomenon, Allah invites every human being—regardless of language, culture, or era—to observe, think, and recognize that this precise system could not exist without a Wise Creator. The night that "covers" is also a metaphor for how Allah’s mercy veils our sins and shortcomings, giving us the opportunity to repent and return to Him before the light of the Day of Judgment reveals all.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, when you witness the night falling and covering the world in darkness, pause for a moment. This very night is a gift from your Lord—a time for rest, for prayer, for quiet contemplation. It is also a reminder that just as the night will surely be followed by dawn, so too will your deeds in this life be followed by accountability in the Hereafter. The One who created the night and the day, who made them alternate in perfect harmony, is the same One who watches over you with infinite mercy. Let this verse awaken in your heart a deep sense of awe and love for Allah, and let it inspire you to fill your nights with gratitude and your days with good deeds, for you are never alone—He is always near, and His signs are all around you.
