Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "An'amta": Bestowed blessings, specifically the blessing of guidance and faith.
- "Al-Maghdoobi 'alayhim": Those who have incurred Allah's anger—people who knew the truth but deliberately rejected or disobeyed it.
- "Ad-Dalleen": Those who have gone astray—people who wandered from the truth due to ignorance or negligence in seeking it.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is the concluding supplication of Surah Al-Fatihah, where the believer asks Allah to guide them to the path of those upon whom He has showered His blessings—the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. These are the people who combined knowledge of the truth with action upon it, and whose hearts were illuminated with faith and sincerity. They are the ones who walked the straight path with firmness and devotion.
The believer then seeks refuge from two deviant paths: the path of those who incurred Allah's anger—those who knew the truth but turned away from it out of arrogance or stubbornness, exemplified by the Jews who rejected the final messenger despite recognizing him—and the path of those who went astray—those who lost their way due to ignorance, negligence, or blind following, exemplified by the Christians who distorted the truth and fell into extremism in religion.
This beautiful supplication carries profound wisdom. It teaches the believer to constantly renew their commitment to the straight path, to seek Allah's guidance in every moment, and to be aware of the two dangerous extremes that lead to deviation: knowing the truth but not following it, and following without true knowledge. It also highlights that the greatest blessing Allah can bestow upon anyone is the blessing of Islam and guidance, for with it comes success in this life and the Hereafter.
The verse also subtly points to the noble status of the Prophet's companions (may Allah be pleased with them), for they were the most deserving of this description after the prophets—they knew the truth and acted upon it with complete sincerity and devotion.
When a Muslim recites this verse in prayer, it is recommended to say "Ameen" (meaning: O Allah, respond to this supplication), though it is not part of Surah Al-Fatihah itself.
Reflection for the Believer:
This verse is a daily reminder that true success lies in following the path of those whom Allah has guided—a path illuminated by knowledge, sincerity, and righteous action. It teaches us to be humble in seeking guidance, to be vigilant against the diseases of arrogance and ignorance, and to cherish the greatest gift of all: the gift of Islam. Let this supplication fill your heart with hope and determination, for the One who guided those before you is capable of guiding you today, and His mercy encompasses all who sincerely call upon Him.
